How far in advance do you book?

We're about 100 days from our trip  to Cancun. We've been checking different sites for prices . Is there a certain timeframe that you normally book? I don't think I want to go more than 2 months out but I wasn't sure when the 'summer sales' start.

Thanks

Re: How far in advance do you book?

  • Usually 3 months out you'll start to see the sales (unless it's busy season like christmas break). I usually book 2-4 months if it's domestic and a little longer if it's a bigger trip like our summer trip to Italy :) We booked that 4-5 months for this summer trip.
  • It depends on the trip for us also, we have had our January 2013 Asia trip booked since August 2011, but we knew we were going, and the price was amazing so we just booked.

Other trips we have booked anywhere from 3 -5 months out, and some 2 - 3 weeks ahead of time, it just depends.

  • i book as early as possible. dh and i go every december and always book early to get flights/seats etc.. that we want.

note: fares are way up this year compared to previous years.

  • We booked a trip to St Thomas for this past Feb 3 weeks a head of time.  Normally, though we try to be 2 months out.

  • Usually the earlier you book, the better. It used to be you could just wait for a last minute flight and go on a trip in three weeks. It is not like that anymore. Flights continue to go up in price, and the schedules get worse.

Many of the last minute flight deals you see on expedia/travelocity/other dot coms are verrrrry sketchy. You are much more likely to be bumped/cancelled with those. I would book right away.

  • We generally book when our plans are set so we don't forget to buy tickets, and once our dates are locked in it's more important for us to get the flight we want rather than wait around hoping to save $50. For domestic trips, which are usually long weekends, this usually means a month or two. For international trips, which are usually at least a week, we plan those way ahead of time because we're both on teams at our jobs where only 1 person can be on vacation at a time, and it makes it easier to find mileage tickets. For our trip to Japan in June we booked our tickets right before Christmas.

  • I book 1yr in advance for the resort/hotel and then book the flight as soon as the dates ate available.

Id rather get the room we want and the flight scgeduel we want than take a chance in waiting it out to save a few bucks and then not get what we want.

  • I book 90% of my personal and business travel less than 2 weeks before traveling. Often only a few days before traveling. Work is too unpredictable for both H and I do do otherwise. I have never had a problem getting a seat or a room nor have I ever been bumped from a flight and I'm nearing 1 million miles on Star Alliance alone. We usually use miles for personal travel and I usually book those tickets 1-2 weeks before travel with no issues.

  • We just booked our July 3rd trip yesterday. This is late for us, I'm a planner so I usually go 6 months out.

  • It depends on where we're going but I don't consider a trip "official" until we have plane tickets.  We just bought tickets for Australia in August.  2-4 months ahead of time is our average so I guess we stuck close to that.  I won't book hotels and activities until we have a flight.
  • I book a lot of our airfare using miles, which usually means I have to book 11 months out if I want the best flight pattern and lowest use of miles. For other smaller trips that don't require taking flights we probably book the hotel 5-6 months out.

We are getting married in PDC, Mexico this November and I booked our airfare a few days ago. I have been watching the airfare for months and it's been slowly increasing so I figured I should buy now before the price of gas continues to rise. As another poster mentioned, airfare to Cancun is SO much more expensive than it used to be. I traveled to Cancun in January 2010 and spent less than $300 for my ticket. For our upcoming trip we paid $581 per ticket; nearly doubled in 2.5 years!

  • DH likes to book well in advance like 9 months or more before. But it can depend on the airlines. For our Nov plans we would like to take Airtran to PR but their booking is not yet open for late November.
  • I tend to plan and book well in advance.  As soon as flights become available, I set up a fare alert on kayak and buy when I'm happy with the price.  I know fares go down sometimes, but on the trips I've booked in maybe the past 2-3 years I have not seen fares go down significantly after booking.  I always, always book the flight first and then focus on lodging.  I prefer to stay at very small hotels and b&bs, so when I select one I generally book it as those types of places only have a few rooms, and tend to book up (especially the ones ranked highly on tripadvisor).  Right now we have a big trip in May that has been booked for about a year, and I recently long weekends booked for June and August.
