Backwards Interview Process
Anyone else feel like the interview process for many companies is backwards? It would save everyone's time and the company's money to tell me the exact responsibilities and a salary range upfront. Here's the process for the past few I had:
1.Talk to HR for a few minutes on the phone to see if I have any interest
2. Fill out an online application
3. Take at least 1-2 online tests (normally takes at least an hour)
4. Wait for results
5. Talk to HR again with them NOW asking interview-type questions
6. Interview with person that would be my supervisor and FINALLY learn the job specifics (and poss salary)
Re: Backwards Interview Process
I think that HR is often in the position to basic screens because the person who might be your supervisor doesn't have the time do all of the screening work. While I get that it is frustrating for YOU, it makes sense for them.
I'm not comprehending why applying online wasn't your first step.
Lately I have noticed a lot of places doing "pre-screening" interviews to match qualificiations and personality before moving on. They can do whatever they want since there are so many applicants.
This.
But you are right about the salary. It is ridiculous that we must "pretend" that salary doesn't matter, when it is actually why most of us even search for a job! That should definitely be listed in the posting. That would weed out so many people from the beginning!
HR screens make sense. They get rid of the idiots who can't handle a simple phone call (trust me! Many aren't prepared!) or who don't have qualifications needed but that wasn't clear either on the posting or resume, and they clarify some things for the applicant and the employer to make sure there is still mutual interest.
Sorry about that...my resume was passed on to the would-be supervisor by someone who knew me. I then received the HR call. It does make sense with what you guys said. I guess it is just frustrating to take these tests without really knowing if I am interested. It is time consuming and a PIA but I am the job seeker
so better my time than theirs. It seems like it would save the companies money to have HR do a full interview prior to the test though, or at least feel out what salary I am looking for.
BTW, the last set of tests took 2 hours. It consisted of a personality test, vocab test, math skills, and problem solving) It was like taking a college final again. LOL
If the tests are online, it makes sense for them to be completed before an interview. I just hope they're upfront about how long it takes to complete!
