Cover letter help?

Anyone have any good suggestions on writing a good cover letter?  Until last summer, I hadn't looked for a new job in over 11 years so the market had changed quite a bit. I am pretty sure my cover letter wasn't very good when I was applying, but I managed to find a job through networking.

My dh is now looking and I feel like his cover letters are kind of boring and not what is needed in this market, but I'm not sure exactly how to help rewrite them. Ive seen articles that talk about needing to add more personality to them, but how do you do that without sounding cheesy?

Any websites/books/articles/suggestions on writing a better cover letter?  Thanks!

Re: Cover letter help?

  • Your basic CL has 3 components:

    1. An introductory section stating what position you're applying for and how you heard about it. If you have any "in" with someone at the company, this is a good place to mention them

    2. A section stating why you are the perfect candidate for the job. This is not a place to regurgitate your resume, but to hit the highlights that show how YOU can be an asset to THEM.

    3. A closing section giving contact info and reiterating your interest in the position.

How you spin all of this without being boring or cheesy depends somewhat on your field. I'm in the sciences, so CLs are expected to be relatively dry, with an emphasis on skills and experience. As you can see a few posts down, some fields like marketing allow you to be more creative in your CL writing.
