Argghhh. Vent.

DH and I are house-hunting in the Twin Cities. Every single one of the homes we love online and have asked our REA to show us on Tuesday has pending sales.

We're living in Iowa right now with DH's parents. How on earth are we ever going to see homes if they keep selling before we can even drive the three hours north to see them on DH's days off????

Re: Argghhh. Vent.

  • I understand the feeling. We have had the same problem due to DH's work schedule. Thankfully, we didn't have to travel 3 hours to see houses. I've gone out with realtors alone to see houses and then reported back to DH. We like the same things and want the same in a house so he would trust me to make the first call on a house. If I saw a house I really liked, I report back to him and then we schedule ASAP to see it with him. I know it would probably be a lot but could you do the same and then if you saw a house you really liked have DH travel up after work?
  • Where are you looking?  See my post above about selling our house ;)

Seriously though, I understand the frustration.  We bought our house (in St Anthony Village) while living in Ames.  We came up on the weekends and looked at 10+ houses a day until we found it.  It sucked.  And we basically just got lucky that we bought in such an awesome neighborhood bc we had no idea what we were doing!   Now with this move to OH, we are just renting to avoid that.  Plus we can't afford to buy until ours sells- so the decision was made for us.

We are in Iowa Falls now, which is about 40 minutes from Ames. We are looking in Plymouth, Lakeville, Apple Valley, Minnetonka and basically places west and south of the Cities. I checked out your listing - we are looking for four bedrooms and land with mature trees - this will be our "forever" home.

What part of Ohio are you moving to? I'm originally from the Cleveland area and I just moved to Iowa from the Cincinnati area.

Renting is smart, though. No sense in carrying two mortgages, IMO.

I've read that the color yellow can evoke the urge to buy. I don't know how true that is, but when I staged our home to sell, I put yellow annuals around the front of the house and got some yellow flowers for the inside too.

I spend time on the D&R board too, and the ladies there might also have some great curb appeal and/or interior ideas to share.

  • At least you know you have good taste in houses? We had similar issues, but we're only about 45 minutes away. Are there attorney review periods in MN? I'm thinking you can see the house and if you like it, put an offer in and get DH to see it within the review period? If not, try to tell yourself "what's meant to be will be and we'll get the house we're supposed to live in." Try not to let it get to you. Good luck!

Those are nice areas.  Where will you be working, though?  I assume you are not working in downtown, lol?  We liked being centrally located bc DH changed jobs a few times and he was always within 30 min commute of anywhere in the cities, but also had a 0.4 acre lot with huge trees.  Although, we got really sick of the yard work and I think when we buy again we will go with a smaller yard.  Raking our yard took days and days of work.

We are moving to Columbus.  My husband grew up in Cleveland so I have been there a fair bit.  I love love loved the TC's, though, so I am pretty sad about moving.
