Running with a kid- any advise?

Last weekend was warrior dash for me- my friends 4 year old son declared that he was faster than me and wanted to do the race also. We explained to him that he couldn't but I promised that I would do a race with him. At the end of the month I am doing a 2K. Its a community race- so pretty small and I figured it would be perfect for him. I asked my friend if he still wanted to do it and she said he had brought it up last night- so yes. Its more important to me to make him happy than to PR- But I've never run a race with a kid. Anything I should know before hand?

Re: Running with a kid- any advise?

  • I ran my last 5K with my 6 yo ds. I learned a couple of things:

    1) He just might be faster than you! My 6 yo is - he can easily do a mile in under 9 minutes; I can't. You have to lay the groundwork at the beginning: no getting too far ahead. I'm not sure how well it would work with a 4 yo who isn't related to you (as in. I don't know how well he'll listen), but I had to spend a lot of time watching and keeping track of ds who was at times upto a block ahead of me. A 4 (or even 6) year old is not capable of just running along with the crowd and meeting you at the finish line.

    2) Dress the kid in a brightly colored shirt - it helps to find them in the crowd. Oh, and make sure they have actual athletic shoes on, not sandals or crocs.

    3) expect them to slow down/be done before the race is over. A 2K might not be so bad, but when my 6 yo was 4, he came for a run with me once and decided he was done at the 3/4 mile mark. Let him know that when he gets tired, you will help him get to the end but he has to be prepared to finish. At the 5K, I dragged/encouraged ds for half a mile, but he picked up speed at the end.

and 4) Let him win! It gave my son so much pleasure to get across the finish line a few feet in front of me, and it has made him want to go and run again and again. You're not going to PR with a 4 yo, so you might as well make it a great race for  him,

It's fun to race with a kid! And you're doing a nice thing for your friend's 4 yo. Enjoy it! And then post back and let us know how it goes. Good luck! Big Smile

  • This was helpful!  My (just) 6 y/o really wants to start running with me.  Glad to know it's not going to be too much of a problem!
  • Great advice!  I'm doing a fun run with DD next weekend and the bright shirt is a fabulous idea.  I think I'll also wear one so she can find me easily.
  • Thanks for all the wonderful advise. Luckily he listens to me (as much as a 4 year old does). I've been taking him places since he was able to walk.  The bright colored shirt is a great idea. He might just be faster than me, and of course he'll beat me because otherwise I'd be a bad auntie. He is so excited. He keeps asking his mom if tomorrow is his big race with Auntie Cole. I am going to make him a countdown so he doesn't drive his mom nuts.
