Marine potentionally dismissed for Obama cracks on FB
Re: Marine potentionally dismissed for Obama cracks on FB
He doesn't have free speech anyway. He's subject to the UCMJ above and beyond free speech. And I especially think that as a leader (a non-commissioned officer), this behavior is even more egregious. One of the things about being a leader in the military is that you have to be extremely careful about publicly critical. It's really bad for good order, discipline, and morale when you're rambling to your troops about how their boss is their enemy. Political conversations are not off limits, they happen all the time. But when you say, as a leader, where your juniors can see, that you will not obey orders of someone senior to you? That's just dangerous.
And I'm totally with you. People get fired for speaking poorly about their boss. A punitive discharge is getting fired, albeit with repercussions when he attempts to get a job later. I hope he loses and gets kicked out. And despite being a liberal, I would have felt the same way about a Marine saying similar things publicly about President Bush.
ETA: And I haven't read this specific article, so I don't know if it's mentioned, but Congressman Hunter is ridiculous. Is he writing letters of support to all the COs of the Marines getting kicked out for failing to meet requirements that are not an issue of the civilian world? Like everyone getting kicked out for PT failures? Or testing + for spice? This NCO was required to not publicly talk crap on his CiC. He failed. Deuces.
My brothers are in the military, both are Dems and disliked Bush, and both were very careful to not say offensive stuff about him, and they certainly didn't post stuff on their FB about it.
I totally agree with all of this. This isn't just a random insulting the president, this is their big boss.
**WishIcould** I sent you a little note on the MM board yesterday. http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/64892948.aspx
He could have his opinions, sure but probably not a good idea to bash his boss on FB. When I was in the military there was plenty of trash talk about the president and whatever else was going on but those were different times and there was no such thing as FB yet. Plus I think those who trash-talked kept it to certain audiences that agreed with their opinions.

Sorry I missed it until now!
H talks about politics at work all the time. I don't think it's a bad thing. A lot of guys criticize policies, H is known as the liberal who will push back, which I think is a good dynamic. He educates himself, and I think it's good for the juniors to see healthy, respectful debate in the NCO ranks. But if it goes to far, it's stopped by the SNCOs. H corrected a kid last year for wearing a NObama shirt to the PX, the kid didn't argue, he said, "Aye aye." I don't know if he never wore the shirt on base again, but he was warned. This NCO had multiple warnings from his superiors and he didn't stop. That doesn't fly in the civilian world either.
