Please help w/ Bare Escentuals!

I have been using the foundation for 8 years (off and on). When I started I wore light, then fairly light, in the fall I was matched to fair. I have really light skin with what I think are neutral undertones. The fair was good for awhile, but now I think it's too light and is starting to look pasty and shiny. I want into the BE store yesterday and the SA matched me to fairly medium. She said I have more pink in my skin than yellow, so she applied it all over my face. It looked like a good match until I got in my car, it was dark, shiny, and really obvious. It also felt and looked really heavy, so I know that she applied way too much. I think that even though too much was used, it may have also been too dark. So, I am thinking that maybe I want to try the matte. Should I try the matte in fair or fairly light? I am going to Ulta today and want some ideas before I let another SA near my face. Thanks for any tips and/or suggstions!

Re: Please help w/ Bare Escentuals!

  • Have you thought about trying another mineral makeup such as Jane Iredale with different shades?  The matte is the same colors as the regular, I believe.
  • I tend to mix two shades of BE to get a good match.  I add a little more of the darker shade in summer and a little more of the lighter shade in winter.  Ask for a sample of the darker shade and try this to see if it works for you.
  • I would try fairly light next. I haven't used the matte. I use the fairly light (the original) and apply/blend some of it down to my neck. Otherwise, my face would look darker than my neck, but the fair is too light. Is your neck/jawline part of the problem that makes it look to dark? When I used to use MAC, the girls there applied the powder to my face and to my neck to even me out.

Also, if she put primer on you and you're not used to using there primer, it will make it look darker (at least, it does on me). I think its because it gives a better "canvas" for your makeup to adhere to.

In the summer I usually go up a few shades and use bronzer (MAC) to even it out. I haven't tried mixing it like the PP suggested.

  • I use the matte foundation and really like it. I already have oily skin, so I don't need my face looking dewy-er.

Do you use BE mineral veil? If so, I've found that the tinted mineral veil is nice for giving your face some color without going crazy. The regular mineral veil washes me out in the summer, so I use the tinted mineral veil in spring and summer and then switch back to the regular stuff in the winter. I've never figured out how to use "Warmth" without it looking obvious and bad, so finding the mineral veil with a little warmth mixed in was nice. Then I use a little luminizer in spots that I want to be a little less matte, like my cheekbones.

  • If you've never tried the matte, I'd try that and see how you like it.  I started using that and then decided to try the original when I ran out and I disliked how fakey the finish looked on me enough that I took it back to Sephora to get the matte again.  Everyone is different and you may not like the matte, but it's worth a try.
  • I prefer the matte to the original....I use fairly light, but I used to have to mix some light and FL together to get the right match...
