My goodness.

Our real estate agent........ I think she hates us. I feel like every single email I've sent her she's rolled her eyes at while responding. I feel like we are such a big burden to her and she totally hates us and I have no clue why. We've only gone out to three houses to look, and one of the houses we actually put an offer down on, and are closing in about three weeks on it.

Before we move in, we have to do some work, so DH sent an email to the seller's agent asking some really basic questions about the house. To which the seller's agent forwarded to our agent, who scolded my DH for emailing the seller's agent.

I am so done with this and ready to just move in and be done with anything real estate related. I don't ever want to buy a house again.

Um, she's right... you can't do that. That's a huge no-no. In some states, that can have contract ramifications that will result in your agent not getting her fair share of the commission. So, don't do that. You have your own agent. Contact her.

Otherwise, why do you think she hates you and is rolling her eyes at you? It is notoriously impossible to read tone. What exactly is she saying that makes you think this?

  • Yeah, that's a no-no. She should have been gentle about telling you though. I sometimes feel like I'm annoying our agent, but not because she makes it seem that way. She had a "bring it on" vibe about her that makes me think she can take whatever I throw. Try not to let it bother you, she's making a commission so it's not like she isn't getting paid.
  • We had no idea it wasn't okay to do that, to email the seller's agent... that's news to me. I feel like I've learned more being on this forum than anywhere else. And to be honest, we didn't do it to be behind her back to intentionally avoid her; we thought it would be easier to bypass her and email the other agent directly, she she is more in contact with the seller. There are much more polite ways to deal with that though.

Basically, we aren't professional house-hunters. From day 1 we had very little knowledge of home buying, aside from what family and friends told us. We relied on her to give us information and it felt like pulling teeth every time I had a question. I don't know if this is typical behavior. Our house is not a huge deal, I don't think she'll be making much money off of it and I think that's why she is kind of annoyed with us. I just get the feeling that because we aren't "big clients," we're an annoyance to her.

  • Sometimes I think this whole thing of going between four groups of people (us, our agent, their agent, sellers) is annoying and takes forever, so I feel you on that. But then I remember how annoying it is when one of my clients does something like that to me. Mostly, it is just to control the flow of information and to make sure that there aren't any misunderstandings. If you verbally agreed to something with the selelr's agent but your agent didn't put it in the contract and the seller's agent didn't bother to do it, you wouldn't have any recourse.

  • Sadly, some agents are like that. They shouldn't be, but at the same time a big client and a little client can take nearly the same amount of effort but with very different pay days. It doesn't make it right, though.

My agent is definitely fine with me asking all kinds of crazy questions. Sometimes she says things in a way that assumes I know more than I do, but when that happens I ask her to break it down a bit more for me. A good agent should understand that a first time home buyer is loaded with questions.

Don't worry too much about it. You're almost at the finish line and you don't have to refer any business to her. I don't think you've done anything wrong and you shouldn't feel like you have.

Thank you... I feel like we've been ridiculously easy to work with. We haven't demanded a lot of time; on average we have about two questions a week to clarify what's going on in the process. We haven't dragged her out and about to a million houses, we haven't walked slowly through the process. We hit things full steam and along the way questions have come up, and thank goodness for this forum or I wouldn't have learned several VERY important points to home buying (for one, I had no idea the FHA appraisal and home inspection were two different things until I leared that here.) I think many times, professionals assume you know things because they've been in the business so long that it should be "common knowledge" to everyone else.

  • Yeah, the agent thing is a huge deal. The reason you have an agent is so you can contact them with questions. The buyers agent represents the buyers. The sellers agent represents the sellers. That's it. If the sellers had a question for you (how's the financing coming, for example) they'd ask their agent, who will ask your agent, who will ask you. Seems convoluted, but that's how it goes.

For the rest, I'd still need an example. When I asked xx question, agent replied with xx.

I don't mean this in a rude way, but you kinda come across as apologetic that you're not more of a money client. I'm wondering how much of her "annoyance and thinking you're uneducated" you're imagining because you think you're small potatoes.

If it matters, the realtors in my area love small buyers. They're the ones that bring in the constant paychecks. The big fish only come around so often. They might come across as inattentive or like you're less important sometimes, but that's usually because they're busy. For every one big sale, they'll have 30-ish small ones that pay the bills.

    We are small potatoes.

Really. We are. Always have been. And when I sense that someone is annoyed with me, I pull back and become less involved.

What you say makes sense, though. I'm so ready for this process to be done :)
