FRANKLIN ? For the first time since he won office in 1996, Rep. Charles Sargent will see a challenger when he seeks re-election in August.

Rob Hathaway, a relative newcomer to Williamson County, said he began thinking of opposing Sargent in the upcoming state primary only a few weeks ago. He listed the ?sanctity of life, the sanctity of traditional marriage and liberty? as those issues most important to him. Hathaway credited Republican lawmakers for at least starting a discussion on these issues within the past year, but said there is more work to do.

?I?m a resident of this county and there are things that are being addressed that need to be addressed further,? Hathaway said.

Sargent, who serves the 61st District, is the chairman of the House Finance Ways and Means committee. He did not immediately return calls seeking comment on the race.

Hathaway retired from the U.S. Army in 2007 and lives in the Fieldstone Farms subdivision in Franklin. He has called Williamson County home for two years, he said.
