About two months ago I jammed the ring finger on my right hand. (After a day of hiking and generally adventurous and risky activities, I jammed it on a handrail in the handicapped stall of a restroom. Go me.) It hurt like crazy and was swollen for days. I buddy taped it (per a phone consult with my doc and an over-dinner-consult with a friend who is a doc). The doc friend said it was possible (given the amount of swelling and pain) that I had a small fracture, but even then, the rec is generally to buddy tape it.
So fast-forward to today. It's still aching occasionally and hurting randomly. (I can always *feel* it basically -- when I type, use my mouse, etc.) If I make a fist that finger is tight, and when I walk it feels swollen sometimes. Also, my finger is kinda crooked--well, moreso there is a bump on the left side of my knucle (so between my ring finger and middle finger).
I can't decide if it's worth doing anything about it. I don't know exactly what I'd do. Maybe go to a doc (not sure if my PCP or some specialist?) and get an x-ray?
It seems like such a silly, small thing...I just don't want to have lingering issues or whatnot.
Re: Kinda random - jammed finger
(preface: I'm not a doctor :P )
I jammed my finger a couple years ago and recall it bugging me for a good, solid week before it started feeling better. I just kept icing it to help the swelling. Are you taking any meds for it?
I'm going to be super unhelpful, but I think I've jammed/broken every finger on both of my hands growing up. My dad (a GP) taped or splinted them and the finger always blew up to an unsightly swollen mess. I iced, splinted/day, without/night until things got better. I can't recall how long that took, but I do remember it being tight and mildly uncomfortable even after I could start bending the finger again.
If it's not seriously bothering you, I wouldn't go to a doctor. But, growing up with a doctor has made me very relaxed about a lot of things.
I took Advil when it originally happened. And I iced it as well (forgot to mention that). It has definitely gotten better -- probably took 2-2.5 weeks for it to stop actively hurting. But then for the past month and a half maybe, I've had these lingering issues.
(Also forgot to mention that it gets achy in my cold office.)
I did something similar in December. Well, my dog pulled his leash out of my hand, and it somehow got stuck or something on my pinky. I'm not quite sure what happened. I had taped it for a few weeks like you did, but when I could hardly bend it even after a month, I went to the doctor.
Turns out, I had broken it. It was too late for surgery, but I went to therapy for 4 or 5 weeks, and it helped a lot. Might be something worth looking exploring for you.
I was sort of afraid of this answer.
Did you go to your primary care doc or an orthopedist (or some other specialist)? Maybe I should just schedule an annual physical with my PCP and have it be evaluated as part of that.
Oh brother.
I went to an ortho. I don't need referrals with my insurance. They did an xray in the office, told me he could re-break it during surgery and try and fix it, but since the bones were lining up ok it may not be worth the risk. I also have a large bump on the first knuckle closest to my hand - it's like the bones shifted over a little or something, because the bones are aligned correctly.
It sucked having to go to therapy, but the ultrasound they did on it (and the stretching they would do) helped tremendously.
