Breaking:deal to end Mali coup in works
Re: Breaking:deal to end Mali coup in works
I'm convinced this coup was an accident. Like they didn't actually realize how far it had gone until it was too late.
And now the Tuaregs have declared unilateral independence...way to go coup, you sure showed how much better you were than the previous government militarily speaking
I was supposed to be in Mali during the coup. Thank goodness I wasn't or I'd probably still be stuck there locked in a house with my coworkers.
They were also scheduled to have presidential elections in 2 weeks. The timing was pretty bizarre and if the coup was fully thought out would indicate that the coup planners don't actually believe constitutional democracy is serving the country's needs as ATT was not running for re-election (not eligible) and there was absolutely zero indication that he would not peaceably transfer power to the victor.
But since they don't have their own currency and already have fuel shortages I can see them changing their tune. Thank you ECOWAS for bizarrely coming to the rescue despite being half-full of non-democratic states to begin with!
I do feel bad for the guy we sent in my place. After 2 weeks of being stuck he was evacuated by land to Ouagadougou. Not fun on Malian roads with roadblocks everywhere.
