Anyone know anything about CREDO retreats? oh, and hi!

Hi, I think I've introduced myself before but can't remember, I do lurk sometimes though.  H is AD Navy.  We are lucky to be in my hometown (lots of Navy bases here!) We have two crazy dogs and an equally crazy kid.

H and I have decided to go to a Marriage Enrichment Retreat offered by CREDO.  We're kinda excited to learn to communicate better and hope to have a good time, and, if nothing else, it is a weekend getaway!  Has anyone been to any of the retreats offered by CREDO and can tell me a little about what to expect? Thanks!

  • I have never heard about it, so I googled.  It's listed under religious retreats.  I don't know if you know that as there's nothing in the description that indicates it's religious, so I thought I'd throw that out there in case that matters to you.

This is why we did not go. We had some, um, negative experiences with the Navy religious offices, and I don't see myself ever seeking their advice (and I am religious, just apparently not the right kind of religious). There was one right before the deployment that was pushed pretty heavily, but we had just gone through 10 sessions of non religious pre-marital counseling, so we felt pretty solid. We also got an email for one coming up, when our spouses are all still deployed...

I will say that I have heard good things about them from other people who I don't think are dumb, so there's that! :)

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

    This made me LOL.

  • I'm guessing they are a lot like the Strong Bonds retreats the Army has.  We have been to several and have always had a great time.  They are given by the Chaplain's office, but they rarely bring faith into the discussions.  Every now and then there will be personal stories where faith is mentioned but it isn't harped on or pushed.  We are usually offered an optional opportunity to worship on Sunday morning, but that's really the only religious thing we see.  The majoirty of topics we cover are communication and the importance of communication, trust and being intimate on more than just a physical level.  This last time, there was an optional parenting class.  I really didn't get a lot out of it.  Most of us thought the couple was a bit odd and rather hippie-ish.  They reminded me of Gaylord's parents on Meet the Parents.

  • We're religious, but go to a very contemporary church. I hope it will be a good learning experience for us, and if not, it will give us some new inside jokes!

Did you not get much out of the whole retreat or just the parenting part?

  • I have several friends who have been on them and for at least one couple, it literally saved their marriage. I have heard nothing but positive things about them and I wish we could go on one. Maybe later when the child decides that bottles aren't full of poison.

It was just that one class.  The rest of the retreat was great.
