And now I really do need to get on a conference call about a budget. My Friday nights are so exciting these days.
Since most FWP are petty mundane
gripes it creates this perception that the reason THESE are FWP is that
so called "third world people" are so consumed with life and death
matters that they are fundamentally different and don't have mundane
complaints. But the reality is that 99% of FWP I read are nearly
identical to complaints that my "third world" friends have too. Just
because you live in Nigeria doesn't mean you never have days when your
pants are too tight or when you're hungover or when someone is texting
you about a party you can't attend or your new DVD is scratched etc. Also
most people who live in the "third world" don't really like that phrase
but you can't have first world problems without a third world.
Re: Found it, re: FWP
See, this is why I prefer White People Problems.
lol
Yeah. I didn't even respond to that in the thread because I couldn't believe that people were saying, "Wow. You're right. It's offensive to say FWP. We shouldn't say that." but then saying they don't care that other words offend some Christians.
Worried about offending people living in Africa that will probably never post on this board. Yep.
Potentially offending a large segment of the population that may be posting on this board. Meh. Who cares? How dare they FORCE me to observe their religion.
Makes sense to me.
I've always kind of chuckled that FWP was considered a more elegant solution to the obvious problems with "white people problems."
Like I said, I'm not so offended by this that I can't see straight. I just think it's a dumb phrasing that is careless and as such has pretty big potential to offend. Shocking to many, third world people are all over the internets too! Though sometimes the nest doesn't load very well in their countries. OH WAIT.
ETA. I think it's silly to think the only people who might be offended by this are in Africa. And that no one in Africa could possibly ever read this board. Or no one FROM Africa or any other developing country. At least 5-6 posters immediately come to mind.
I wasn't saying that only Africans would be offended or that they can't post. Just that there is a significantly larger number of Christians that could be (and from the posts in the thread are) offended.
If you're worried about offending people, you should be worried about offending people, right? I don't really understand why it is wrong to intentionally say offensive things about one group but OK to do it to others. Unless you think people don't have a right to be offended by blasphemy, which sounds like the case.
Yes, I agreed with you in there...
I participated in the last one for the first time but then I felt icky afterwards. Those threads should just be called "place where I bit*h about stuff."
That actually wasn't my point at all. My point was, this FWP meme is all over the Nest and all over the internet. Until that post, where I used it as an example, I have never called anyone out for using it, because while I do think it's offensive I also don't really think it's my place to call out every single time someone says something that could possibly be offensive. And I also very strongly recognize that while it is offensive to ME it will not be offensive to many other people, and that their use of the term indicates no malice. I accept that different people have different worldviews. I don't like all of them, but whatever. I won't engage in the things I disagree with, but I would never expect random acquaintances, and especially not internet strangers to conform to my particular ethical quirks.
I expect that on the internet people will say things that offend me. And things with which I strongly disagree. Unless they are factually wrong (i.e. Goldie and her ridiculous opinions about Mexicans) I don't feel like I have a right to ask them to stop. Obviously you feel differently and I respect that. We just have different opinions.
I don't want to misquote, but to paraphrase she basically said that Mexicans haven't done anything to stop the crime in their country and therefore she thinks it's wrong to give tourism dollars to the Mexican people. There have been several posts here, on MM and on Travel where she has reiterated some variation on this theme.
Except, of course they had a free and fair election in which they selected a candidate who ran on a platform of fighting the cartels tooth and nail and whose draconian anti-drug and anti-cartel policies were heavily endorsed and supported by our own government.
Maybe 2012 will prove her right since Pena Nieto, the likely next President, will be elected because the Mexican people are tired of the violence CAUSED BY the war on drugs initiated by the government they had previously elected.
Glad I'm not the only one wondering about this. It's been brought up multiple times since I've come out of lurking this evening.
