Australian Critters - again
Today LO and I were sitting on the couch and I looked over to my right and a huge bleeping snake was on our deck. HUGE!! It was a carpet python. Pretty much harmless, but that didn't stop me from hysterically calling DH and telling him to come home. I then freaked out and ran next door to my neighbors and asked what a person does in this situation. Call RSPCA (like the Humane Society), Call the police, Call the fire station? He found a snake catcher and due to my hysterics my neighbor and DH were on the phone to the same snake catcher at the same time.
DH arrives home, snake catcher soon after and Mr. Snake is captured. The snake catcher said it was 5ft long. Honestly it looked longer. It looked taller than me.
This place and its damn critters are going to kill me and LO's first words are going to be a stream of cuss words.

You Aussie ladies constantly remind me that it's far better to live in Africa than in Australia when it comes to wildlife.
I would have the snake catcher's number on speed dial on my phone.
There is no such thing as a harmless spider IMO! Snakes, lizards, bugs I can deal with but the spiders are freakin huge and horrible! We get heaps of red backs and not the small kind, the size of jar lid kind. I have to check the yard in summer before letting the animals or any children out there. And we are in the bloody suburbs!

I seriously just want to move back to civilization above the equator. Did you know that of the first 20 or so English women that were sentenced to Australia, 16 chose death instead? Yeah I'm thinking they had the info the current travel brochures exclude ...
Ugh. That one we do have here. It was in our tent when DH and I went on a roadtrip last spring.
Needless to say, I did not sleep much that night. Even though the area where it was was zipped off.
It probably wont help to tell you that huntsmans come in twos!!!! They usuually have a partner nearby!
Yep- scary stuff.
I take my spider knowledge seriously- know your enemy and all that. I went bat sh8t crazy when they sent spiders into space on a mission a few years ago, I mean did no one watch eight legged freaks!
I also have spidey senses- I often wake up in the middle of the night wake hubby and say there is a spider in the room. He will turn on the lamp and sure enough there will be a big bugger just watching me with his sixty thousand eyes.
(Yes I realise I am the crazy spider woman)
In fact, the owner came and took the one away. And later that night, the second one came out. Then I felt bad that we took away its partner. At least she didn't kill it.
And being the crazy spider woman I am strangely comforted by the fact that these two spidey partners can no longer breed so saving the world from 20 more huntsmans.

i_jaye does that huntsman issue about travelling in pairs also apply to funnel webs? We had one in our kitchen last night,
DH is usually blase about spiders because we back onto a creek but he was really freaked out by it. I wondered and feared whether the spider might have a partner somewhere.
I could never live in Australia. Never.
Also, I should know better than to google the beasts you guys talk about. I probably would've gone slightly more redneck on that munchkin. DH is my "save the animals" conscience though, so usually snakes and spiders get caught and released.
Not that I know of- juvenile males stay in the burrow with the mother until about 2-3 years but don't leave the burrow. It would have been a male funnel web since the female stays in the burrow and only comes out to get prey as it trips the alarm across the door. The males are known to occassionally wander into a house. They also love shoes so don't leave them outside!
Though a lot of times people confused mouse spiders for funnel webs!
