Re: Breaking news: Navy jet crashes into apartment complex in VA

  • WAVY.com has coverage. It's really awful looking. Reports are that it might be a senior complex.

  • Yeah, it hit a senior complex and so far it looks like only one bystander was injured/sent to the hospital...

Some reports are saying one pilot is at the hospital, some are saying two :( As a military/pilot spouse, it's a sad day for our aviation community :(

Hopefully no other people are injured..

  • That's just awful.  Prayers for all involved.
  • Both crew members - one is a pilot, one is an NFO (Naval Flight Officer) - are at the hospital. Reports I have read indicate no fatalities.  Either way, a difficult day for the Navy, Naval Aviation, and Navy families in VA Beach and everywhere.

  • Yikes.  Unfortunately crashes happen more often than they're publicized.  If they don't crash into civilian buildings, people don't tend to hear about them.

A couple of H's instructors were killed doing dumbshits in their plane.  I can't remember the story, but it involved showing off.

They interviewed a witness on CNN earlier who said that he wasn't all that surprised that this happened. He said the Navy pilots have been getting more and more daring with the altitude and manuevers they make while flying over civilian areas.
  • Considering the damage, I'm surprised no one was killed.
A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.

I'm sorry, but that is absolute crap.  Military aviators are NOT show boaters for the most part.  They are extremely careful.  They know the risks and do everything in their power to minimize them.  MOST "daring" maneuvers in the VB area are done over the ocean.  My husband, who has been flying in the Navy for 10 years (and is a trained/former Test Pilot) is serious as a heart attack when it comes to doing dangerous things in an airplane.

Civilian bystanders who watch the jets flying have absolutely no guage of what is "daring" and "low altitude".  The fact is, VB has been building in Oceana's crash zone for years.  THAT is what needs to be analyzed.  From all of the initial reports this plane was doomed at take off and the aircrew did everything in their power to avoid hitting populated areas.

ETA:  I realize that you passing along that this civilian said this in no ways implies you agree/assume it is true.  It just fires me up when random people sipping their Starbucks watching the jets fly by make judgements about how daring they are or the risks they are taking.

  • I make no assumptions about whether these particular guys were dumb or not.  I merely related an anecdote about another crash, one that probably no one has ever heard of, and I trust H's assessment of that particular scenario.

But I've also heard enough shop talk to know they're (at least in their bragging) not always the most cautious.

Shop talk and being "cool" on the surface and the way they approach their aircraft once they are suited up and in their gear are very different.

In 10 years of being married to an Aviator and 3 years in a Test Pilot tour where my husband was doing things that most pilots/nfos wouldn't dream of doing "on purpose", I can count on one hand the amount of guys and incidents that were caused by pure show boating and ego.  It is rare and those guys rarely make it through their JO tours.

Bragging and actually *doing* are not the same thing.  The cool kid club in the ready room can be rough and I think it would be smart to beleive about 5% of what you hear.  Most pilots and nfos are big nerds in flight suits.
