Don't know what salary to ask for

My husband and I are moving back to NJ after a few years in PA and I'm interviewing for new jobs and I am baffled as to what to ask for in terms of salary.  I'm looking to be either a day care director or a Kindergarten teacher in a daycare.  I can find out what Kindergarten teachers in the area make and base my salary requirements off of that but the director is where I am at a loss.  Websites say anywhere from 25-60K!!! I have my teaching certificate and have been teaching in elem. schools or daycares for about 10 years.  HELP!!! :)

Re: Don't know what salary to ask for

  • Have you checked  http://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm? You can search by zip code, which should help narrow your range. Also, based on job openings, do you fall within the lower, middle or upper end of the experience/requirements met? You could base your range on that--don't ask for 25K if you're over qualified for the job, kwim?

  • Depending on where you are in PA and where you plan on going in NJ (I have lived and worked in both and a few places nearby/between) - I would assume it would be a tad bit more than what you are making now.

For what it is worth - I gave the job I have now a 10k range for salary. I broke it into a "between this and this" but willing to entertain between "this and this" (a bit lower). They started me at my highest point of my "entertain requirement. Then gave me a raise two months later to my lowest point of my "hoping for" requirement.
