Any wannabe red heads with advice?

I've had my hair all kinds of shades of red in the past, and for the first couple of weeks I was in love with it, but it always fades to a reddish brown on me. I was wondering if y'all had any advice on how to keep it looking vibrant, without getting too pricey or high maintenance.

I also have very fine hair, so the longest I can go without washing is a day, without my hair looking wet.

Thank you ladies!

Re: Any wannabe red heads with advice?

  • Unfortunately, I think its just the nature of the beast with red dye.  I've never found anything to make it last longer.  A good color conserving shampoo and conditioner (I like Aveda) helps, but reds just don't last long which is a bummer.  I love red hair.  I gave up and just keep mine brown now.

  • Step 1: Use shampoos that have zero sulfates. I like Nature's Gate from Whole Foods. The huge bottle is really inexpensive, and the pomegranate one smells awesome. It doesn't leave any weird residue or weigh my hair down at all. Just nice and clean.

Step 2: Use a color-safe conditioner or color-depositing conditioner. I generally use Suave naturals (with no silicones) because it works well for my dry/curly/frizzy hair, but I also use a little bit of a color depositing conditioner mixed with it.

Aveda has some that are okay, but I love Rocco Altobella's Claypac moisturizer in Red. I've been using it for years on my dyed hair and it REALLY helps to prolong the color. They have shampoo too, which may work, but I prefer to use the Nature's Gate or other sulfate-free one.

I buy mine online (usually through amazon), or have my mom pick some up for me from the salon in MN.

  • Get a Brazilian blowout.  It totally seals in the color.  My roots are showing long before my color fades.  If I just have my stylist touch up the roots, I can go about six months before I need all over color again.  You need sulfate free shampoo, which prolongs the color and the BB.

Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
  • I'm naturally dirty blonde but went red a year ago and unfortunately it's just a high maintenance color. I've tried pricey color shampoos like redken and pureology but it still fades pretty dramatically after a few weeks. I get my hair colored every five weeks but I just love being red sooo much and get so many compliments. I'm sorry not really the answer u were looking for :(

  • I just went BRIGHT red in Feb. My stylist had bleached my hair (from dark brown) and used something like manic panic. That didn't last long... I decided I didn't want to keep bleaching my hair and she used another red colour that would blend with my roots... that ended up orange when it faded. I just picked up L'Oreal Excellence HiColor at Sally Beauty Supply in 'Red Hot'. I'm actually really impressed with the coverage on my roots. This formual is for dark hair specifically. I only coloured it on Weds so I can't say anything about the longevity yet.

Otherwise, don't wash your hair everyday; keep it out of the sun; use a shampoo/conditioner for coloured hair. Since I've gone red the colour's barely lasted more than 3 wks before it looks horrible... it's definitely a high maintenance colour.

  • I use Hair One (Sally's knock-off WEN) to cleanse/condition my hair most days. When I notice the color is a little bit dull, I use Tressa Watercolor's Fluid Fire (they have a few shades of red) and it seems to pep to color up a bit. It's a depositing shampoo. I still have to get color every 5-7 weeks (at which point I have about an inch of roots) but the depositing shampoo helps a bit.

  • Thank y'all! I'm still on the fence, and if I do go red it will definitely be after summer. I'm taking note of all of these products though!!
