New Neighbours - WWYD

We have new neighbours two houses down from us.  B met the husband yesterday and I guess they moved here from Saskatchewan and don't really know anyone or have any family here.  They have a 9 month old little girl which makes me super excited Mackenzie will have a friend to play with!

Anyways, I think I'd like to take something over for them and introduce ourselves, but I've never really done anything like that before.  Any advice on what to take for them?  Have you ever/do you introduce yourself to new neighbours?

Re: New Neighbours - WWYD

  • I never have.  What about a fruit basket or dessert?  Good luck and tell us how it goes!

  • Oooooh fun! I like desserts or muffins, or a fruit basket. I'm sure anything would be appreciated! My mom took some Christmas cookies over once when she had new neighbors moved in around that time of year. One of our neighbors brought us over a roasted chicken when we moved here. It was so nice! He rang the bell around dinner time, in fact we were just getting ready to go out for dinner, and said he knew it was hard moving in and getting settled and hopefully it would help us have a good dinner. It was just a store bought rotisserie chicken, but I was so thankful and hungry! It was the first time we've ever had generous/nice neighbors.

  • My neighbor drove DH around the whole town taking him to set up everything for the house and then made him supper!

But I would totally buy/make a lasagna, have paper plates and silverware (just in case they didn't unpack that yet) and pop on over to say hello!

  • The day we moved in, one of the neighbors brought over a pile of take-out menus for the local places they liked and a gift card for their favorite. It was seriously the best thing ever.

  • I think these are all great ideas!  I was going to suggest cookies, but any of these things would be great.  I would definitely go introduce yourself though!

  • When I moved into my current place, my neighbor brought cookies over and just kind of said she just wanted to welcome me to the neighborhood. She was kind of quick in her introduction but I now know that's just her way, she's more to herself but still friendly. I'm more outgoing and would have loved a few casual getting to know you questions like where I moved from or what brought me here or something about her observations... like my dogs or whatever... you could ask her about her little one... maybe suggest a play date or something. If she seems agreeable to that, then the door opens for you to ask her in a few days again.

I'm all for some sort of bready thing... like carrot or banana bread or muffins (great for quick breakfast, especially if they are still unpacking)... cookies, or whatever YOUR specialty is. :)

  • My mom used to make pound cakes for new neighbors. I was also going to suggest a banana nut bread or something similar.
