Breathing Techniques when running

I think my breathing sucks and it's slowing me down. I did a 5k on sat and I kept having to stop because my throat was on fire. I think I'm breathing too much out my mouth. Is there a right way to breathe? I'm sorry if this is a silly question but if this is something I can fix or help improve my running before I get into longer distances I'd like to work on it.

Re: Breathing Techniques when running

  • I have to really concentrate on my breathing, Ive found that if I don't I get really gassed out. Once I settle back down & re-focus Im usually ok. I don't know how to give you any hints on the timing b/c its different for each person & their stride...then again I don't know much b/c Im basically a newbie :D

Oh, I also breathe through my mouth the entire time, but thats b/c I don't get enough air if I try to inhale through my nose...I have a weird nose/sinuses.

  • I chew gum! And breath through my mouth. I try to make sure that on long runs I have easy breathing, if I start breathing heavy I slow down. But at a track workout or a 5k I'm going to be breathing hard.
  • i'm not an expert but what i do is count to 3 and release. i think if you google it there are more.

  • I get into a rhythm.  I hreath in through my mouth and nose together for two strides, then out through my mouth for two strides.  I'm pretty sure this is how I learned to breath during cross country in high school.  I remember having to practice breathing in both my mouth and nose at the same time.  Not sure if it's "right", but it works really well for me.

  • i breathe in and out through my mouth, and i probably sound awful to anyone who can hear me, but if i don't concentrate and breathe purposefully like that, i feel horrid.  but once i get my rhythm going, i feel so much better and i don't feel like i'm going to die.  i inhale for two strides, then exhale for two strides (much like PP).  the best is when i can find music that matches this rhythm--it feels even better.
  • Back in cross country we were told in through your nose, out through your mouth. I try and stick to in for 2 strides out for 2 strides like others have said. I've also heard that deep breaths from down in your belly are best, not short breaths from your chest.
  • Two shorter breaths in and one longer out through my mouth has worked great for me!
