Charleston, SC / Savannah GA

We are planning to go to this area Memorial Day weekend. How would the beaches in this area be that time of the year? Is it warm enough to get in the water. We normally only go to the Gulf so this would be a new experience for us.

  • Normally, the water temps would still be a bit chilly but manageable and the air temps would be mid 80's.  However, we've already hit 90* a couple of times. Not sure what the temps will be, but I had my feet in the water the other day and it was really nice.  You should be fine.  Just keep in mind that the water isn't as clear here as it is in the gulf.  Our beaches are on barrier islands.  Those islands are surronded by marsh, creeks and rivers.  It looks like river water.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I am glad we're going the year there are record highs. Smile Is there anything that we shouldn't miss in the area?

For breakfast in Charleston, you must eat at Hominy Grill and Toast! Both are great.

  • I grew up on Tybee Island and live between there and Savannah, now.  There is so much here to do.  It really depends on what you are looking for.  There are a few tour companies in Savannah who offer two day trolley tickets for between $10-15.  You can get on and off the trolley at any designated stop for those two days.  It is a great way to get a feel for the Historic District.  There are a ton of other tours around town, as well.  I recomend the Haunted Pub Crawl, Capt Mike's Dolphin Tour and the marsh tour with Sea Kayak GA.

I haven't been since I was 18, but my memories of Oatland Island's wildlife sanctuary are some of the best memories I have of Savannah.  The boardwalk over the marsh was just enchanting to me; moreso if you can catch it on a day when you're the only one in the park.  If you like nature walks/wildlife, it's not to be missed if it's anything like it used to be.

  • I'm from Savannah.  Tybee Island is always a nice quiet place to go.  There are some nice simple places to eat, and the beaches during the work week are usually pretty calm.  It's packed of course on weekends and holiday's. The water should be perfect.  You do have to pay for beach parking lots or on the street.   Down town Savannah is BUSY and hard to get around in because of the tourist and traffic.  It's prettty and a new experience.  Have fun.
  • Thanks everyone! I think we will have a great trip!
