We're headed to New Orleans for a work conference for DH at the end of April/beggining of May. I'll be on my own during the day, but we'll be together in the evening. Anywhere special (restaurants, music venues, etc.) I should make reservations? Hotel is taken care of through work. Any suggestions about things I could do on my own during the day? We won't have a car and we're staying on the River Walk. If there's something that's must-see, I'm willing to find a rental car. I was thinking about trying to find a garden tour one day, and I know we'll go to Cafe Du Monde at some point. I visited in 2000, but I'm sure a lot has changed, and I don't remember much about it anyway.

Restaurants are likely to be crowded in the evenings, and many will require a credit card to guarantee the reservation. The last weekend in April and first weekend in May are Jazz Fest weekends and the city is full to brimming over with Festers. I would definitely call any place you are thinking about as soon as possible for reservations. In my experience, it is nearly impossible to get reservations at Commander's Palace during Jazz Fest.
I would recommend a ride on the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar line and the Aquarium is well worth a visit. It should be decent weather for a visit to the Zoo.
eat at Stella! you won't be sad. And Mr. B's for BBQ shrimp.
We've also done graveyard tours, ghost tours, carriage tours - they are fun. I would take some kind of tour around the FQ - there is so much amazing history in this city. We've also done a swamp excursion which was very fun/different. i had no idea swamps could be so pretty!
Brunch buffet at the Court of Two sisters. Go when the weather is good and sit outside in the courtyard.
I did something similar several years ago when DH took a training class and I toured the city - our hotel was in the french quarter. I shopped and toured the french quater for the most part. Near the end of that area is a National Park Museum with some interesting information on nthe area. There are also area bus tours from the hotels or that depart near Cafe Du Monde (Grayline tours I think). I did not discover those in time and the hotel ones did not work with our schedule. So I have no recommendations on which ones but some go to plantations. There is a lot to see within walking distance your hotel.
I would agree with this list. Although I'm not a big fan of August, but I do like NOLA. I also like Willie Mae's for fried chicken, but they are only open M-F 9-5.
I find Stella to just be "okay" and sad thing is I know the chef. I stil go back, but I don't make a priority either.
I really enjoyed
