Just pretend I'm temporarily insane ok?

Tell me about the Chicago Marathon?

I may or may not be considering running it in 2013.

Remember...temporarily insane mmmm k?

Re: Just pretend I'm temporarily insane ok?

  • DO IT!  I did it in 2009-but it has been my favorite marathon ever.  The crowd support is amazing throughtout the entire course, very well organized.  Loved running through the various neghborhoods-and picking all the places I wanted to eat after!

  • Do you have a recap anywhere?  I'm just trying to think it all through with the logistics etc.

I'm leaning towards doing Chicago IF I decide to go through with this in the event it becomes my one and only although you ladies say that doesn't happen :)

I hate the big crowds but I do run better in them and I know I'll need it for 26.2.

  • Everything I've read about it is that it is hot as hell.

That was super helpful, wasn't it? Smile

See....I keep reading this too.  Hmph.  Maybe someone will suggest other races then but this is what I know:

    1) It must have TREMENDOUSLY AWESOME crowd support

    2) Be very well organized

    3) Not too hilly (as in I'm not running Flying Pig)

    4) and not too hot (which is where Chicago becomes iffy)

  • I ran it last year. Overall, I'd recommend it but be aware of what you are getting yourself into. It can be hot, crowded, expensive, sells out early, and is a very large race. That said, the crowd support is amazing, it is flat and well-organized, and it is a good choice for a first marathon.

I just read your recap.  You have also run the Amica Marathon right?

What are your thoughts on that one?

  • I didn't do a recap-but I did it the year it was cold and sunny-there were snow flakes at the end.  The year before they had to cancel it bc of the heat.  There is no telling with the weather anywhere.  It is a large race-and it was my first race that they didn't have a half marathon option at the same time.  I kept thinking-how am I going to deal with 40,000 people.  But it was fine.  We are slower-so I knew I wasn't looking for a BQ time; I didn't have issues with feeling too crowded.  And one and only doesn't happen...I'll be doing my 10 this Sunday!

I've done the Amica Half Marathon which I really really like. Honestly, I think the half is a better choice over the marathon. The weather is usually decent, there are rolling hills but nothing too bad, the scenery is gorgeous, and it's pretty well-organized. The second half of the marathon is out in no mans land, and there isn't much crowd support anywhere. A lot of the course is difficult to access once the race starts.

Does Shamrock work for you? There isn't too much crowd support, but it has everything else you're looking for.

Not next year ;(  Hmmm, I'm not sold on this so I can keep looking until I find the right fit.

Thanks for all your help too!
