If your running route is a loop,

Do you try to vary the direction so you're not always running it exactly the same way?

I like my neghborhood loop. I go out, run up a long hill, then have a gentle coast downhill for about three quarters of a mile, before hitting hills again. Because we're in a small neighborhood, I just repeat the loop until I'm done most days (other routes take me along minor highways with no sidewalks). I like my direction - the long gentle downhill is fun to run and the hills are hard but quick.

Lately I've been wondering if I should be reversing direction every once in a while.

If you run a loop, do you always go the same way? Should I be alternating sometimes? thanks!

Re: If your running route is a loop,

  • I have a couple loop routes that I use, and I typically go the same way. I think it's really only important to change it up if there are hard turns in just one direction (like on a track). Other than that, I can't think of a reason to alternate.

  • I always run the same way. I have a few different loops though.
  • I do switch up my direction.
  • I don't think there's any reason why you *have to* alternate directions other than it would get mighty boring running the exact same route day after day.
  • I have a bunch of different loops and there's only one that I change directions for.  that's only if it's windy.  Smile

  • I have two loops, one I don't change directions for but might soon since it has a HUGE mile long hill that I really feel like I want to run up as a new challenge.  The other is a short loop I do only on days I do not have a lot of time, and I do switch that one up occasionally.
  • Everything about the immediate area I live in is a loop with HILLZ of varying degrees depending on which direction I run. I definitely switch it up because otherwise it wouldn't be as challenging or exciting.

Ditto this. Although sometimes I'll turn around and back track at a certain point instead of completing the whole loop. Mostly though, I just run the same stinking route.

  • Yes - I reverse the loop so I never do the same direction two days in a row. I get bored with the same loop, so sometimes I mix in a few different streets for different scenery.

  • I run a figure 8 loop around my neighborhood. Sometimes I vary the direction, but I usually run the same direction and just switch up which loop part of the figure 8 I run first (my house is in the middle of the figure8).
