Which Florida beach with kids?
I want to do a family vacay in late September around my daughter's 5th birthday. We'll do 1/2 time at Disney, but she also really wants to go a beach. So which beach in Florida would you recommend for a few days with a 5 year old and a 22 month old that we can drive to from Orlando? Thanks.
Re: Which Florida beach with kids?
How far are you willing to drive? Captiva Island is our favorite place to take our kids so far. We've been twice and had a blast. It's about 4 hours South of Orlando.

Agree, we went to AM last year and loved it there. My SIL goes to Longboat every year and also loves it.
Captiva used to be our favorite beach spot until we visited Siesta Beach. Siesta is gorgeous and the beach is very wide, which I appreciated having two small children. (We were able to sit up camp further back from the water and the kids weren't as tempted to run into the water every two seconds.) It would be about a 2.5 drive Disney.
I'd definitely recommend a Gulf beach over Cocoa Beach any day. The Gulf is much prettier.
I love the Melbourne, Palm Bay area. It is only an hours drive from Orlando.
Really close to there is the Sebastian Inlet is an awesome place for kids. It is like a giant wading pool that is warm!! If you go to the other side of it, it is the full on wave ocean. So it is the best of both worlds.
Sebastian is a great place, but I wouldn't recommend it for small kids (unless you stay in that weird wading pool thing that's on the north side of the bridge).
The current is insane @ Sebastian. I've spent a ton of time on the beach surf-fishing there - I've rarely seen a calm beach day(but I have seen a boat sink ...)
I prefer gulf coast beaches over east coast beaches - the water is a lot calmer (unless you catch it on a freakishly windy day). If you don't want to drive as far south as Captiva/Sanibel you could check out Ft.Desoto- It's a nice beach/park. Sand Key Park @ Clearwater beach is nice (thats where I usually go instead of going to the main beach in Clearwater).
Honeymoon Island in Dunedin is nice - gets crowded quickly on the weekends. traffic usually backs up down the causeway. arrive early.
We just got back from spring break on Longboat Key with our 3 kids (9,7 and 2). They had a great time. It's a fantastic island. They've also enjoyed Sanibel and Anna Maria Island.
When they were 3 and 5 we went to Amelia Island Plantation for a few days and then drove to Disney for a few days. It was a few hours in the car but very manageable. The plantation has a kids club that my girls really liked.
