I know that August can be a bad time to travel through Europe especially if you are visiting small towns because a lot of small shops/restaurants are closed for holidays, but this may be the only time we can go. This year there is also the Olympics to contend with, so, it would likely be the last two weeks of August. That being said, are there any negatives to Paris in August? Will it be extra busy? Otherwise, we may not be able to go until early December.
Re: Paris in August?
My advice: dont.
The heat is unpleasant, the only people around are tourists and the few French people you are likely to meet are not going to be happy about being stuck in town in August.
December is lovely in Paris. Parisians love to decorate for Christmas and there are beautiful light displays everywhere. And the weather is reasonably mild....chilly and possible snow, but lovely with a coat and gloves.

I've done Paris both times of year and they were both lovely. August can be very hot and there are def more tourists, but as PP said the museum pass helps immensely with the lines. Most of the closings that France is known for in the summer are outside of Paris because Paris is such a big tourist draw, so if you'll be primarily in Paris you really won't notice it. In August you can also see Paris Plage, which is when the city brings in barges full of sand to dump along a section of the Seine river banks to create a "beach" (no one swims) along the river with concessions, games, etc....it's fun to see and neat to people watch from the bridges onto the river.
That being said I love Paris in December because I don't think you can beat the Christmas decorations/atmosphere and the lower numbers of people is certainly a bonus. Depending when you go in December you might find cheaper rates at hotels, etc because it isn't such a touristy season.
I know that doesn't give you a firm answer either way, but some pros/cons of both.
I would totally go to Paris in August, it's probably the only time that you can expect the weather to be nice consistently. When you get really hot just walk into a church, that's what I do every time I'm in Rome in August
Last time I visited Paris it was December and it was packed with tourists just as much.
I live here in Paris now, but I vacationed here in August 2009 and it was fine. The city wasn't too crowded, the heat was no worse than NYC (where I was living at the time) and most things were open. In comparison, it was much less crowded than, for example, right now in April when I feel like just about everyone has descended upon the city for "April in Paris." I have friends visiting this week and they said the line to go up the Eiffel Tower yesterday was FOUR hours long.
But, I do agree with pps that December is also a lovely time to visit Paris.
