Backpacking in the Southwest US

Calvin & I are going to a wedding in LA in June, and want to take the opportunity to do some backpacking in the southwest on the same trip.  We're considering a couple options, but one is to fly from LAX to Flagstaff and drive up to do the Grand Canyon North Rim, and another is to fly from LAX to St. George's, Utah to do Zion and/or some of the other national parks in UT. Multi-city itinerary airfare doesn't look too awfully $$.

We can't decide which park(s) to go with.  We'll probably only have a couple days.  Any suggestions?

Re: Backpacking in the Southwest US

  • I haven't back packed at either place, but I prefer the Utah scenery over the Grand Canyon, so that is the one I would pick. My husband and I have done some backpacking in Palm Springs, so if the multi-city itinerary gets to costly that would be an option. We take the aerial tram up into the mountains so it isn't too hot and they have a few trails to choose from.

Not very helpful. My only other piece of advice is that if you like bouldering than you have to check out Moab.

  • I totally read that as backpedaling.

Then yo ass git a all-expenses paid cruise ta tha Mediterranean n' yo ass git ta hook up Jared Padalecki on tha flight over while bustin yo' jammies. But still no medal.
  • We've done both the North Rim GC & Zion NP in UT.  The GC was amazing but I'd suggestion Zion, it's a GREAT park.  They have a super easy shuttle system (that you have to use) that brings you to all the trail heads so you don't ever have to worry about parking.  It's really a beautiful park.
We LOVED the Narrows (but beware the water is FREEZING all the time) but so worth it.  We also did Angels Landing which also opened up to some great views.  If you want me specifics or want to see some of our pics from the trip PM me.
