Anybody here use vinegar instead of fabric softener?

I'm really interested in starting this mainly to use less chemicals and also to save money. I do like my laundry to smell nice, so I've heard you can mix essential oil with the vinegar. Do you just put the vinegar in the spot that the softener usually goes?  Any tips? Thanks!

  • I do!  I use maybe a quarter cup in the place where the softener goes.  No essential oils.  Even when I've gone way overboard with the vinegar by mistake, my clothes don't end up smelling vinegar-y.  They just smell nice and fresh.  Love it.
  • I put it in the fabric softener dispenser, straight up.  The clothes don't smell like vinegar after they're dry.

  • I'm going to try this with my towels.  It's regular white vinegar, correct?

This is my question, too. Can you use apple cider vinegar or does it have to be white vinegar?

I didn't know this and used to use vinegar when I bleached my towels.

  • I put it in the downy ball. You can put EOs mixed with water and spray on a towel to use as a dryer sheet! I think that's the most effective
  • My washer has a softener dispenser and I put it in there. My clothes never smell like vinegar.

I have also added it right to the wash with my detergent for musty smelly items, usually towels in the summer.

  • Like pps, I use white vinegar right in the fabric softener dispenser. I just fill it up to the "fill" line, probably about 1/4 c. I do mix in essential oils (usually lavender) but I haven't noticed any difference in (no) scent from it, whether I use the oils or not, and no matter how much or how little vinegar I use.

I've also tried putting some drops of essential oils on a rag and throwing it in the dryer, but I don't notice any scent from that either once the clothes are dry... I don't use any dryer sheets either, just wool balls.

  • I think I would like to try using vinegar as well, but does anyone use it and hang their clothes to dry? I hang a majority of mine and am wondering if, since they don't go through the dry, if they will smell more like the vinegar after hanging for awhile.

I drip dry a lot of clothes too, and they don't retain the vinegar smell.

I also didn't know that about the mixing w/ bleach - I've been doing it for ages!  Good thing our machines are in the garage or I could have killed us all!

Yup -- all my jeans, workout clothes, and a bunch of other things get hung to dry.  No vinegar smell!

I want to try this, but my H's mom did this to his clothes in HS.  We were just talking about this during Easter and how the smell of vinegar has traumatized him (he was joking, but the smell really does bother him now) and claims all his friends said he smelled like vinegar.

Maybe I will try it with the towels first...
