Work-related question: networking
I have a work-related dilemma. I love my job, but it's a part time gig with no prospects for becoming full-time anytime soon. I applied for essentially the same position at another school almost a month ago. I'm totally qualified and I match the description to a tee. I haven't heard anything about an interview, but the application interface says the search is still in progress.
I'm going to a meeting tomorrow where I'm pretty sure the head of the dept I'm applying to will be. We haven't met, but I know his name. Here's the question: Would it be totally inappropriate to introduce myself and mention that I'm still very, very interested in the position? I'll be there representing my current school, and it feels a little shady to be looking for a new job while I'm on the clock. On the other hand, this seems like a golden opportunity to put name+face for the guy making the hiring decisions. What say you, P&CE?

I agree with the above for purposes ofthe meeting. However, depending upon how your small talk with him goes,* I might reach out to him a day or two later, when not on the clock, and mention the position and your continued interest. Use tomorrow's meeting to put forward your best foot at all times.
*Asterisk for this reason: I'm an attorney and we are notoriously shameless about networking. I am not familiar with your profession's culture so you need to decide whether reaching out after the meeting is appropriate. Given the question you are asking, I'm guessing that it might be.
