Blush/Bronzer advice

I just received Sephora's Blush Bronzer duo in Sunset Dance / Dance in The Lights. http://www.sephora.com/silk-blush-bronzer-duo-P307547 One of the reviews said it was very comparable to the NARS Orgasm duo, so I thought I would give it a try since I wanted a bronzer.

Anyhoo, I tried it out today after I got home from work and the blush went on really dark when I used my normal technique (I've so far used Bare Escentuals blushes that require building them up).

Dose anyone have any good advice on how to apply blush and bronzer so it gives me a nice look without looking too... bold? :) I'd like to look more 2012 and less 1983.
