Florida Panhandle recommendations
We've been going to Captiva Island with family (including 6 kids ranging in ages from 13 to 2) for several years. Do to driving distances, we're looking for a place in the panhandle to go next year. We love Captiva because: 1) we can rent a house walking distance from the beach with a pool; 2) we don't need a car once we're there; and 3) there are several restaurants, ice cream place and grocery within walking distance. Anyone have any recommendations?
Re: Florida Panhandle recommendations
It is, but you can't walk places in Destin. I would look into Seaside, Santa Rosa, Watercolor, etc.
Seaside is incredible. I used to go there with my family each year.
It's walkable and they have cute cottages right on the beach. You can also rent bikes as well. There is a "center" market square where there's a deli, ice cream shop, restaurants, etc, but you can stock up on the essentials there and there's no need to drive anywhere.
Watercolor or Seaside. Watercolor is one of my favorite places to stay in Florida. I love the resort and how family friendly it is. The condos/houses are absolutely beautiful. They have golf, a kids club, numerous pools and biking trails.
We've never stayed in Seaside but Watercolor is just a few blocks west and we generally walk into Seaside when we're there.
It's a lot more laid back then Destin. There are no high rises in this area and it's more of a quiet walkable seaside town. If that's what you're looking for it's perfect.
We have a house in Destin and it is really only overly crowded in March and April during Spring Breaks. But it is definitely not walkable.
Thanks everyone.
On Captiva, we've stayed in Endless Summer, Sea of Green, Cabo Wabo and Case Captiva. We rented Endless Summer through Royal Shell and the other three through American Realty of Captiva (they have a great map for looking at house - http://www.captiva-island.com/amrc/capmap.htm). We prefer staying on Laika Lane or Wightman Lane - quiet streets with easy walks to the beach and restaurants. Lately we've been getting groceries delivered from Bailey's on Sanibel at the start of the week so we don't need to stop for groceries on the way in.
