Cutting a pattern question

I hope that I don't annoy you all with all my newbie sewing questions...

I made my first purse this past week and it went fairly well. When you're working with a pattern how to you cut it out? I tried to pin and cut with shears but that didn't seem to work well (maybe I didn't have enough pins in...)

I also tried to use the rotary cutter and that worked a bit better but I had a hard time when I had to cut second pieces from the pattern.

I usually pin it down like crazy and use scissors. If it's a long straight edge I will use my straight edge & rotary cutter. Using more pins should make it easier on you.

I use shears most of the time, and pinning like crazy really can be helpful, but I find that the quality/sharpness of the shears can make a bigger difference.

I am L.A.Z.Y. I hate pinning patterns.

As long as the pattern isn't too detailed, I lay it down with pattern weights and use my rotary cutter (I have a few sizes for those smaller curves and a big cutting mat).

Just take your time. Cutting is one of those tedious things that has to be done. Like mopping the floor. Blah!

As long as the pattern isn't too detailed, I lay it down with pattern weights and use my rotary cutter (I have a few sizes for those smaller curves and a big cutting mat).

This is pretty much what I do (but I don?t have weights so I use dictionaries and other heavy objects) if the pattern doesn?t have too many curves. If it?s super curvy or small pieces, then I pin and cut. And sharp shears make a huge difference.

Sometimes I trace and cut. But I bounce between rotary and scissors.
