Kony2012: where are they now?

Just read that IC released a sequel to the Kony2012 video a couple weeks ago. I assume it came out with very little fanfare because I just found it googling kony2012 and looking for most recent news...

Does anyone else have any follow up on this?

Basically, a lovely, intelligent, well educated (we're talking PhD from Vassar here) friend of mine was insane about this when it came out. We debated it hotly over breakfast one morning and she felt pretty certain that Kony would be caught soon because of this video.

So, the whole world knew his name and college kids put their plastic bracelets on. As I predicted to my friend, the fickle cable news network, life in 140 characters society we live seems to have all but forgotten- from what I can tell. Just wondering if I'm missing something?

She refused to believe there could be a downside to the IC video going "viral" and, like many, treated it as though nothing else had ever done so. I don't want to prove her wrong necessarily, but we did make a wager.

Re: Kony2012: where are they now?

  • I don't know, but I went to a Charlotte Bobcats game on Saturday and I saw 5 young adults with Kony 2012 shirts on.
  • I love that so many people felt energized for this cause and yet not one could tell me how the video does diddly squat in catching Kony. Or how they were in any way contributing to "the cause" aside from posting the video on their facebook.
  • Apparently the new video is about what to do next.

But it doesn't seem like people care as much anymore. Sure, some still do but the millions who went crazy for the video, not so much? I think that when faced with the prospect of doing more than just hitting "like" or "share," most people throw their hands up and say there is nothing they can do...
