Visa for Dominican Republic?

I've heard you need a visa or tourist card (even if you're a US citizen and have a valid passport) to go to the Dominican Republic.

Should I get it ahead of time (if so, where?) or should I wait until I get to DR and purchase it at the airport?

Never had to do this before, so any help would be appreciated!

Also - we're staying at the Iberostar Bavaro resort. Ranked #7 out of 95 resorts in the area. Pretty excited :) Any excursion recommendations as well?

Re: Visa for Dominican Republic?

  • According to the State Department website you can get it beforehand at the Embassy in DC or the Dominican consulate offices (I am not sure where those are located) or you can get it in the airport once you arrive in DR.

I'm sure some of the ladies on this board who have been to DR might have some other info.

  • No, you don't need to get it ahead of time.  You can buy it right in the airport when you arrive.  Just be sure you have cash (USD) on you.  They won't take credit cards.  When we were there five-ish years ago, the card cost $10pp.

  • You buy it upon entry into the DR at the airport.  Like PP said, it's $10 a person, payable in USD.  One thing worth noting - when we flew in, everyone had $20 bills, so if you happened to have a $10 bill they let you jump right to the front of the line since they needed change to break people's $20's.  Might be worth bringing two $10 bills along for you and DH so that way if they need change, you can get through immigration faster.

  • We just went last November and it was $10 at the airport.  It was fine just getting it there (all they do it give it to you and about 10 seconds later, they shred it).

We stayed at the Iberostar Grand Bavaro, which is right next door to the Bavaro.  They are great resorts with a lot of different restaurants available.  We didn't do any excursions though, so I can't help you too much there.

  • Thanks! Very helpful, as always ladies!

emw1023 - how was the food there? I've heard rave reviews and that you get access to all the Iberostar resorts by staying at one. True?
