What can you tell me about Air Force OTS Graduation?
We still have a little bit of time until it actually happens, but what can I expect? What is dining out like? Since my husband is prior enlisted and I've been an AF spouse his entire career do I really need to go to the spouses orientation? My girls are going to be coming with me, my IL's will be around to watch my oldest but my youngest still nurses all day. Is it alright to bring her along to some of the events? (obv. not the dining out)
Re: What can you tell me about Air Force OTS Graduation?
DH graduated last year and I went to the spouses orientation. DH was previous enlisted (but before we met) and I knew most of what they talked about. It was a panel of some of the wives from the base talking about insurance (difference b/w standard & prime), importance of updating wills and having POAs ready, joining the officer wives clubs on base etc... I had no childcare so I brought DD with me (she was 9 months) and there were lots of other moms there with little ones. We sat in the back so DD could play on the floor and I could step out if she got loud. No problem. I took her to every event except the dining out.
I wore a nice cocktail dress but I saw everything from full formal wear to beachy wear! I would go with a nicer cocktail dress....for ours there were a TON of people crammed into the dining room and it was HOT!!!!!
Dining out was fun (mainly because the other men/women in DHs flight were a really cool group so we all had fun talking). It was my first outing without DD so I enjoyed it 10X more b/c of that
There are "rules" of dining out that your DH (and the women at the orientation) will tell you about. Things like no leaving once dinner has begun (I felt bad for some very pregnant ladies!), always have water in your glass, no clapping (they bang their spoons), etc. Don't worry about it (my DH had me super nervous). You will also experience the men going to the Grog. It is cute/silly.
Have a fun weekend!
I went to a couple dining outs when H was in ROTC (and not even my bf at the time). I knew nothing, but besides the miserably boring time, I don't think there was anything from it that would surprise a seasoned spouse. Infinite toasts with water, some boring keynote speaker, cold bland food. The usual.
Since H commissioned long before we even dated, I never went to any graduation thing, so I can't help you there. I've never gone to a spouse orientation, though, and I don't feel I've suffered for it, and I didn't have enlisted spouse experience. I went to a base orientation when we moved overseas, where spouses were "encouraged, and even that was mostly a waste of time. I didn't need a 2 hour brief on school and childcare options since I'm child-free. I imagine you already have that sort of stuff figured out.
BLT- Hi
Stan- I already know all there is to know about everything!!!!!
...kidding. I'll still go but I know a big part of it is a "Tour of the base including CDC, Commissary, and BX!!!!11!!" Maybe I can sit that part out
I know I'll learn a lot and I was reading on the website last night that we have an opportunity to share some "wisdom" with the other spouses, so that's cool. Not that I have much to share, but I like learning from other spouses and their experiences too.
I'm glad to know I won't have to get a super fancy stuffy dress for the Dining Out. I just became part of a spouses/SO group on FB for the class DH is in and the ladies have been posting pics of their dresses since they left. I didn't even think about it til about a week ago haha!
I'm thinking about this dress for dining out with these shoes. This is the dress I have for graduation but I'm not completely sold on it. It looks really fantastic on me but I dunno...if I can lose another dress size by graduation, I might get something different
(plus that dress was only $50 at Tj Maxx, and I can always take it back)
