Fiji
My boyfriend (of 2 years) and I want to go to Fiji. It's been our fantasy ever since we met to vacation here. I am clueless. All the travel websites about Fiji seem shady and seedy. I'm not overly trusting of paying these travel sites for my vacation. Anyone been? Any suggestions? Should I just use a travel agent? I don't want to go broke by going on this vacation so we would be on a budget I wouldn't want to spend more than 4k on the whole trip.....

I just looked into going back to Fiji and the airfare (domestic, international, and interisland) were about $3400! I'd look for a killer airfare special, unless you have miles. I have been once before and stayed a few different places, but they were all mostly over your proposed budget. If you want to keep things inexpensive, check out staying on the main island at Port Denarau (Hilton, Westin, Sheraton, Sofitel) or possibly along the Coral Coast, like Outrigger.
EDIT: Check out fijime.tv. There is a link at the top to find Fiji travel experts. I used an agency to book my first trip, but will likely do it myself this time. I think to get all of the pieces together, you are better off with a Fiji expert. You can also find South Pacific experts on islandsinthesun.com. they, too, have a link to find a TA and they are totally legit.

Flights to Fiji are comparable to Bora Bora, though if you catch it at the right time, Air Pacific rates can be around $950/person whereas Air Tahiti Nui flights are typically around the $1100/person mark. Hotels in Fiji are somewhat comparable, but tend to include more. For example, an overwater bungalow at LikuLiku is around $1500/night. A midrange-high end OWB Bora Bora will cost around $1K-$2K/night. LikuLiku is couples only and includes all meals, though. However, once you get there, Fiji is a lot less expensive. The exchange rate is better between the USD and FJD than it is between the USD and XPF. The XPF is tied very closely into the Euro, so we all know how that goes! I think our flights were a little more at the time (3 years ago) but we got the OWB at $600/night on some kind of special. I haven't looked at prices of airfare to Bora Bora but I get emails on deals all the time for hotels and it's gotten quite a bit cheaper than when I went...
Euro looks like it could be falling (I day trade currencies). So if they follow closely, Bora Bora could become cheaper
My brother went to Fiji when he was living in Australia. He was on a student budget and did not have a hard time finding lodging in his price range. You don't have to spend 11k to enjoy yourself. I think his hotel was no more than $120 a night.
Agree that if you are flying from the US, flights will likely be expensive. I'd look into he offseason.

Yeah the comments about costs surprised me, but it makes sence when your talking flights from the states (its only 3 hrs form Oz). However you cna definately do it on the cheap, other than Bali it is Australia's playground and very common for families to go for a low cost resort holiday.
I've heard great things about this resort as well as the coral coast region - not sure of costs though
