First Half Marathon Taper

Hi Ladies!

I have been lurking and am so inspired by all of you! I am running my first half on April 29th and have been loosely following Hal Higdon's Novice 2 plan. I am a week ahead of schedule at this point (did 11 this past Sunday) and am wondering if I should do 12 this weekend and then an easy run the weekend before the race? The HH plan has me doing a 12 mile run one week before the race.

Anyone want to share their tapering experience and what worked best for you?

Also, what would you all recommend for after the half in terms of weekly mileage? I plan to do some 5 and 10Ks this summer, then a half in October and a half in January. What should my running schedule look like to maintain my endurance? When my next half approaches, should I follow another training schedule and start off with lower weekly mileage?

Thanks in advance for your insight - it is much appreciated!

Re: First Half Marathon Taper

  • I am no expert, I did my first half last fall and I am in training for my second half now.  I also followed Hal Higdon, but I think I used a different plan.  I ran a 12 mile long run 2 weeks prior to the race and the weekend before I did a 10 miler (and then just two little 2-3 mile jogs during the week leading up).  Worked for me!

When I am not training I really only do about 15-18 miles a week.  While I am training I still only do between 20-25.  I find that I do 3-4 runs (1 or 2 of which are speedwork, even when I am not training) and then one longer run on a weekend day.  It is what works for me and my schedule, but everyone is different.

Have fun at your race in a couple of weeks, you will be great!  You can do this!

  • You'll be just fine doing your 12 miler 2 weeks beforehand, then a shorter run the weekend before (maybe an 8-10 miler).

I've ran a 10 miler the weekend before all of my halves and it's always worked well for me.

  • I've run 10 the weekend before and I've run 12 the weekend before.  I've PR'd doing both.
  • I missed my 12 mile run and did 11 miles instead. I forget why. But I ended up doing 11, 10, race, for my weekend long runs, and just did two short runs the week leading up. Being sure to rest as much as possible.
