Three Maryland educators share in Mega Millions winnings

Three Maryland public school educators have come forward to claim their share of the record-breaking Mega Millions jackpot. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving profession! ----------------------- Stephen Martino, director of the Maryland Lottery, said Tuesday the winners wish to remain anonymous and few details about their identities were made available, except that the winners were a woman in her 20s, a man in his 40s, and a woman in her 50s. They pooled their money and bought 60 tickets, each spending $20 at three Maryland locations, including the 7-Eleven on Liberty Road in Milford Mill where the winning ticket was purchased at 7:15 p.m. March 30.Each will have about $35 million wired into their bank account within the next 10 days. All three told lottery officials they plan to continue working despite winning the jackpot. The winners include a special education teacher, an elementary school teacher and an administrator. Lottery officials said they do not work in the same school, but declined to say which district they work for.

Same here.  These people seem to like what they do and have heads on their shoulders.

Yup!  My parents were educators - now I wonder if they know any of these people - at least the oldest woman.  :)  (I live about 10 mins from the winning store)

  • Do you think they'll really continue working or once their $$ is setup and the interest comes in that they'll have a change of heart? I mean, I get not wanting to quit during the middle of the school year, but with all the troubles teachers are facing right now I can't imagine that the desire to just up and quit is going to be something they can just shove off for years.

Honestly, I think they should quit.  There are so many teachers out of work, they should open up spots for 3 of them.  They can always volunteer at their schools!

So, now does the McDonald's chick say they found her ticket???

The school year is almost over, so it's not like they have a long time left.  If it was me, I'd probably still be in shock and want to continue as much normalcy as possible.  I think it would be easier to fly under the radar if they finished out the school year, than being the teacher who left school right after a local had a winning lottery ticket. There would be less of a chance of coworkers speculating.

  • I could see the older educators taking an early retirement. But I wouldn't quit if I were the 20-something. I might change how much I worked or where I worked, but I would continue to go to a job everyday.
  • If they all left their jobs tomorrow or even resigned this summer, it would probably become very obvious that they were the lottery winners. I bet they stretch it out to help keep their anonymity.

  • I would finish the year, for sure.  Then, it'd be peace OUT.

Can you imagine logging onto your bank account and seeing something like "Available balance: $35,000,002,492.29"?

  • Well, obviously these teachers eat their breakfast in McDonalds and found the hidden ticket!

Has nutjob come forward to explain this yet?  Even more puzzling, how did she pay that lawyer who handled her press conference?  He wouldn't be stupid enough to bill her, would he?
