Is Mexico Safe? AI?

Our original plans to go to visit family fell through. So we have decided to go somewhere tropical. We are on a budget and were thinking about Mexico AI. Is it still unsafe?

Re: Is Mexico Safe? AI?

  • No. There are great risks that you will drink too much and get a sunburn.

AIs in Mexico have never been unsafe. Most parts of Mexico that Americans visit for AI holidays are statistically safer than North Dakota. Then again I'm sure some believe it's still unsafe to go to North Dakota.

  • We're going to Mexico at the end of May.  My personal opinion is that if you are going to a resort area and don't plan to leave it, you'll be fine.

  • ive been to cancun and RM every december for the last 10 years. see siggy for may and december trips. clearly i dont have an issue with it. and we're not stay on the resort people. i feel safer there than walking from the subway to yankee stadium sometimes. holy god!! LEAVE THE RESORT !!! EXPLORE!!!! DO your research about where the issues are.

north dakota!! but isn't there a lot of wildlife there? couldn't I be trampled by a deer or something? cross that off the list :) LOL

Well some would say that things just haven't been the same since the Dakota War :)

I hear that a skirmish may flare up at any time! It's only been 150 years :)

  • I am an accountant here in Canada and every year after tax season my Husband and I go to Mexico to relax.  This year we are taking our 5 year old granddaughter with us for 1week in Cancun and 1 week in Playa Del Carmen.  I definitely would not take my granddaughter if I had any thoughts in my mind that there were any safety issues.

Go and enjoy yourself.  I love Mexico.  We are thinking of retiring there someday!

  • Thanks for the input. Last year a few of my friends and I were looking at a place to go as a group and when I mentioned Mexico like RM two of the couples went pale and said they would never go to Mexico b/c of all the dangers. Therefore the group trip was cancelled because no one could agree on an area that none of us had been to.  I figured it would have been fine to go to an AI and then maybe do some touristy exploring.  I just wanted to get the thoughts from other people.

FYI I wouldn't DARE go to the Dakotas! Yikes!

  • Its a fantastic place to holiday! We've been to Los Cabos, the RM, and Cancun area and I'd like to get to Puerto Vallarta at some point.

We always do excursions off the resort and have a great time.

There are risks to ANY holiday, in any country - the US or Canadian gov't websites detail crime rates in each country and you'll find Mexico is safer than Jamaica, the Dominican, Barbados....quite a few places I'm sure your friends wouldn't be concerned about.

Be aware of your surroundings, don't try to buy drugs from anyone and you will have a great trip!

  • The touristy areas are fine. They are patrolled by four different police agencies. They don't want anything happening to the tourists.
  • I was married at Playacar Palace in Playa del Carmen in February.  I was there two weeks.  It was AMAZING.  It's just like going anywhere else......be careful.....but to rule it out is just dumb IMO.  I would go back in a heartbeat.  AND we walked all over up and down 5th avenue and the beach.  GO and have fun!

  • We have been to Mexico 2 in the last year and a half and will be going back within the month. Like I tell everyone else, everywhere has its bad parts, even your own hometown has places you wouldnt walk at night I'm sure. If its your first time I suggest staying in a resort just so you become aware of what things are like in Mexico and learn a bit of the country. But definitly dont stay on the resort, we did lots of excusions out of the resort and never once felt unsafe. We stayed on the Riviera Maya side

    My suggestions would be

    -Dont take valuables

-Stay on a resort (ie hotel wise but do excursions)

    -Respect their customs and traditions

-Dont walk around like you own the place

-Dont get intoxicated and venture out on your own

Mexico is a beautiful country and even though its had its time in the news, you would be missing out on what it has to offer.

  • All-inclusive hotels are the safest way to go to Mexico!  Make sure you have the hotel arrange for transportation to pick you up at the airport and never accept a cab from airport drivers!
