Pertussis - colleague's 7wk old daughter has it :(
She's been in intensive care and has had a feeding tube, but is as of now, at least off of oxygen. It makes me sofuckingmad that this disease is PREVENTABLE and tiny babies suffer because of low vax and booster rates.
/rant.

Re: Pertussis - colleague's 7wk old daughter has it :(
how awful for the baby and the mother.
Above Us Only Sky
but but but INGREDIENTS!
I'm so sorry for that poor little baby.
I miss you lite-brite!
Just offer me support, you don't even have to get your hands dirty.
Can I tritto this? How can anyone see those commercials with those babies fighting for air and not vaccinate their children?
Well ...
Jenny McCarthy said and Herd Immunity!
On the realz - that commercial KILLS me. I immediately grab Nae and start rocking her. I can't. I seriously just can't even think about that. She went to the dr last week for her well baby and got her shots.
So sad. I hope she's ok.
Both of my boys were directly exposed at school (from children who were vaccinated but contracted it anyway) and were put on antibiotics the county health dept. recommendation. Fortunately they didn't come down with it.
Situations like this are why I chose to follow the standard vax schedule, not a delayed one. I support people choosing to space it differently if they wish, but for me, I want those vaccinations in their systems as quickly as is safely possible because exposure risks are on the rise.
Zeus and Bubba
I'm on the train w/ you.
btw copz-I can't handle your siggie. It's too funny/adorable.
I just took it out, I was afraid it was too big. How are the babes?
That is so sad. My thoughts go out to that family. How horrible.
I get ripping pissed when students come in my office with a cold. I can't even begin to imagine how all you moms must feel about people who willingly expose your children to worse. I would flip my shiiits.
awww what was it? a sloth?
They're both doing really well DD is super sweet w/ DS and seems to be adapting well. He's healthy and starting to smile and coo a lot.
That is so sad.
And, this is yet another reason I'll request anyone to spend a significant amount of time with my newborn get the TDaP.
I don't know - I know that shortly after she was born he said that he "gave her" his cold. She's been sick for weeks, and they first suspected cold, then RSV, and now I guess it's pertussis. When he came back from leave a couple of weeks ago he DID have a cold - sniffly, sneezy, etc. So I don't know whether he had a very mild version and passed it on or what; or if she got it from someone else. I don't really want to ask since if it was from him I am sure he feels 1000% awful about it. he sent out an email to our group saying he did not "have pertussis and was treated for exposure", but I don't know whether that means he tested negative and was treated, or that he never had the pertussis vax. I suspect the former. So who knows.

Oh no... I hope she gets healthy soon.
I'm w/ eddy. I'd for real go all DIAF on someone who exposed my newborn to pertussis. Actually they'd be lucky if I only burned down their house.
Joins the set the roof on fire, let the MFer burn train....
I just can't. If my poor baby had to fight to live at 7 WEEKS for a preventable disease... I just can't ... people better hope I don't find out who they are that are spreading this disease.
Call me Kat =^..^=
Add me to the angry mob.
I still have a hard time understanding why so many people were so quick to side with Jenny McCarthy. I don't get it. I remember she was the gross host of Singled Out who's line was "give it up for ____." Did she ever say anything else? She never struck me as anyone with depth or smarts, but that could just be me judging her for how she portrayed herself on that show. I mean, if someone like Barbara Walters began campaigning, I could get why people would be willing to believe it. But seriously, Jenny McCarthy? Someone please enlighten me if she's not a total idiot.
I agree this is very sad.
That said, as somebody who is always up to date on this particular booster, got pertussis, and accidentally gave it to a bunch of kids, I can tell you that the "low vaccination rates" thing is scapegoating.
The acellular vaccine has been shown to be less effective than the old one, recent increases in vaccinating pregnant mothers may make the vaccine less effective in their children, and (I wish I was joking) there are doctors who tell people that they cannot get or spread pertussis once they are vaccinated. It leads to disease-spreading behaviors. This is why I went to a children's birthday party when I was sick with this disease--a medical professional told me the cough was probably bad seasonal allergies and could in no way be pertussis. By the time I realized it was something much worse than allergies and demanded I be tested, it was too late; I had already spread it. I feel guilty to this day. I also feel furious that even in my area, where vaccination rates are high, the breakouts are being blamed on "low vaccination rates" while people continue to remain uninformed that a more effective version of this vaccine exists.
I hope for your colleague's child gets better. I also hope that medical professions start being honest with people about the benefits and shortcomings of vaccines so the public can behave more responsibly.
That is awful, epphd. How sad and infuriating.
I also don't think it's scapegoating to blame outbreaks on non-vaxers. Anecdote alert: My kids were exposed to pertussis b/c of a non-vaxer in my friendship circle. The only reason they didn't get it was b/c their vaccines worked. I'm not saying the p.p.'s comment about the current vaccines are invalid, just that there is a problem with fewer people vaccinating and causing the disease to spread.
