Stinky closet - how to freshen up?

Our coat closet has become rather "stinky" or "musty" smelling.  Any suggestions on the best way to freshen it up?  We don't store shoes in there - just coats.  TIA!

  • Febreze and maybe stick some of those Renuzit/Glade fresheners in there...

  • Fabric softener sheets stuck in pockets?
  • I would take everything out and wash what can be washed. I would also put some baking soda in there. Febreeze in small spaces doesn't really work for me. Put in some Damp Rid, which will help get rid of the musty smell.
  • My Papa always used cotton balls dipped in vanilla extract to get musty smells out!
  • the other day i saw these weird paper envelope things that had lavender or other herbs inside. and they are actually for freshening up closets. they come in packets of 4 or more. i think i saw them in marshals or tjmaxx. and i know my mom bought some and she says theyre amazing. they even have a little hook to hang like a hanger.

  • Take everything out, sniffing everything and cleaning it all (in my house it could easily be a little "suprise" one of the kids left in a pocket).

Check for any signs of water damage from possible leaks.

Use cedar blocks or hangers to freshen it and keep moths out. Or use the sachets (weird packets pp mentioned) to give it a more perfumed scent.
