Road Trip from CA to MN

My husband and I do this road trip at least twice a year, but this time we'll have at least one other along with us.  We are planning to drive from Northern California (Sacramento area) to Northern Minnesota (Duluth area).  Usually the hubby and I just drive straight through taking turns and don't stop until we hit South Dakota where we spend the day with a friend.  This time we'd like to break it up into at least three days.

One place we definitely want to go is Mount Rushmore.  I've been there before but my husband and the other two have not.  In fact, this will be the first time one of them has even been outside of California (besides Vegas).  I'd really love to show him "America" or at least a little part of it.  And since I've been to all of these places but only to drive through them I'd also like to stop and enjoy a little.

So what's interesting between Sacramento and Mount Rushmore?  Someplace in Wyoming you'd recommend?  Maybe a day in Salt Lake?

We're also going to spend one night in Reno to officially start the trip if anyone has a suggestion of where we should stay/what we should do.

 Thanks!

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

Re: Road Trip from CA to MN

  • Grand Teton National Park would be good. It's beautiful, and you can see a lot of the park in a short time.  Make sure to stop at Jenny Lake and either hike around the lake or take the ferry across to Hidden Falls. And eat at Dornan's Chuckwagon in Moose. The good isn't anything spectacular, but the view is todiefor!

  • I've done the trip too (from Minneapolis to San Francisco).  I'd definitely stop in Yellowstone and Grand Teton.  Also Badlands.  I think Salt Lake City would be too much of a detour to be worth it.
