Paris itinerary - Versailles a must-see?

We will be in Paris for 4.5 days (one of those days being a full-day trip to Normandy).  I am trying to figure out if we should also try and fit a day trip to Versailles in there.  Will that be too much running around or is it worth it?

Re: Paris itinerary - Versailles a must-see?

  • Worth it. It's unlike anything I've ever seen in my life.

  • to me, not worth it. i thought it was kind of a let-down. i'd much rather spend that day in paris at some of the churches or museums.
  • I've gone to Paris a few times, but haven't been to Versailles (or any other day trips from Paris). I guess it depends on what you like and how you plan to spend the rest of your time in Paris if it's worth it or not.

  • I think it's totally worth it, but you're already trying to cram alot into a small space.  FWIW, when DH and I went, there weren't a ton of people there and we were done by 1 or 2 (we got there when it opened, I forget what time), and spent the rest of the day in Chartres.  Granted, I had been before so we skipped over some parts.

  • Versailles was neat to visit, but I don't think it is worth using one of your 4.5 days for if you are already headed up to Normandy for one of those days.  I'd save it for a future trip, unless you've already been to Paris.  There is so much to see (and eat!) in Paris.  My favorite Parisian activity was just being there and soaking up the atmosphere - something you can't rush.  Have fun!
  • If you only have 4.5 days and are using one for Normandy I would save Versailles.  Versailles is beautiful and amazing, but there is so much to do/see in Paris I think you're better off having the extra time there.

  • Versailles was one of my favorite places I saw while in France. I guess you'd have to decide what's important to you - seeing all the major stuff in Paris or skipping a couple things to go to Versailles. If you'll be in Paris during a weekday that would probably be the best time to go, especially in the morning. Versailles should be less busy and you'd get back to Paris in time to do a few things that day.

  • I found a way to fit it in my itinerary because I can't imagine not seeing it.

  • I've visited Paris three times and have been to Versailles on two of those visits so obviously I like it quite a bit Wink I would suggest spending a half day there which would leave you with three days in the city. I have an entry in my travel blog here on my last visit to Paris, including Versailles.
  • I am on Team Not Worth It.

There is so much to do in Paris, I wouldn't waste the time going to Versailles.

  • To me, not worth it. I've only been once. I would choose Chartres or Normandy over it any day.
  • I was disappointed in Versailles.   I wanted to see how the rulers of France lived, but most of the furniture was destroyed or sold during the Revolution.  We also went in January so the gardens weren't as nice as I'm sure they would be in the spring or summer.
