Another highlights/hair coloring question

I have to color my hair to cover grey (I am only 34!! Noo!!!!) and my stylist dies it as close to possible as my natural color.  I like to have highights added for dimension.  That said, I don't always have a spare $150+  for a cut, die and highlights every 8 weeks.  Sometimes I just have to color at home (my stylist actually helped me choose a color) and forgo highlights.  I just can't afford it all the time.

My question is, how do you ladies up keep your colors/highlights?  Do you have them done every time you get a cut?  Does anyone ever try the at-home highlighting kits?  It feels like a waste sometimes to get all of that done, and then 8 weeks later have to dye over it all to cover greys and help the texture of it.  But I just can't afford it all the time.  Just curious how others handle it....

Re: Another highlights/hair coloring question

  • I do peek-a-boo highlights so that they are under my part and the re-growth isn't as obvious. I highlight once every third all-over color, and while they aren't as light as when I highlight they are still their since my hair is lighter (I hope that makes sense!).

I wouldn't highlight at home, I would leave that to the professionals especially if you have to use bleach to lighten it.

ETA: for what it is worth, I dye my hair every 6-8 weeks. When I just dye it, it is about $70 and when I dye and highlight it is about $110

  • I tried to highlight my own hair once in college and it did not go well for me.

I have to color my hair every 8-10 weeks as well because of gray hair. Money is tight this month, so I'm just doing an all over glaze. The highlights I got last time will still show through a bit. Then sometimes when my hair is getting too one-dimensional, I'll have a few highlights put in.  My stylist has sometimes just added a few around my face and didn't charge the price of a full highlight.

  • This is exactly why I stopped highlighting my hair :( I love the look but couldn't keep with the maintance.
  • I have been highlighting to hide grey for over 20 years.  My stylist highlights every other appointment using very thin strands to achieve a natural look.  Every six weeks my hair is cut.  Every 12 weeks my hair is highlighted.    The last time I tried a home highlighting kit (1995), I did something wrong and I had these awful brassy-orange streaks in my hair.

I get my hair professionally colored and highlighted twice a year. I retouch at home every month. My highlights last because I don't color over them, I only color the new growth (grey) and they're thin and subtle to begin with. You really have to look very carefully to see where they end.

  • Don't feel bad, I'm 26 and have to color to hide my grays. It used to be just for fun/style but now I need it. *sigh* Anyway, I color every time I get a cut, every 8 weeks, but I only get highlights every other time, every 16 weeks. The highlights are done under my "top layer" where I part, so the regrowth is not noticeable at all.
