New runner- 3rd wk of C25K and my knees hurt!!!

I used to run all the time like 10 years ago.... Thought I'd get back into it by doing the C25K. Apparently I'm not 23 anymore! Thoughts? Should I take a break? Continue and slow it down? Help!

  • My first thought is your running shoes.  When I am ready for new running shoes I'm amazed at the places that ache.

  • I would try new shoes. Get fitted at a local running store. Might not be the issue, but it's where I'd start. I'm on week 4 and I've had a little knee pain, but very little and I it goes away quickly. And I'm more than 50lbs overweight. Of course, everyone is built differently, but doesn't seem like that type of pain is normal.

  • Ditto on the new shoes. I had the exact same problem when i started running and almost wrote it off to "i am just not meant to run".  Thankfully, i found this message board, went and got fitted, and now don't hesitate to buy new shoes when i get those aches and pains. 
    Icing at the end will help with discomfort and i have found that a compression style knee brace also helps alleviate some of the pain. 

    Congratulations on starting the program.  Keep up the good work.

  • I also had a lot of knee pain when I started C25K.  I took a few extra days off, iced them and just took it slower overall. It's a shock your joints, ligaments, tendons to run after not running for so long.  For me, the pain subsided with rest and as I got stronger happened less and less frequently.  So for me, rest and taking it slow really helped.

     New shoes (fitted at a running store) are a must too.

     

  • I'll jump on the "new shoes" chorus too.  I went through my first year of running with some off-the-shelf shoes, and they held up okay but I often had sore knees and sore shins.  Finally in November in anticipation of my first half marathon in January, I went and got fitted.  It made all the difference - no more knee pain, no more shin pain.

  • What type of pain? Intense sharp pains or aches?

    The reason I ask is because I'm in week 7 of c25k, and earlier in the program my knees would ache the day after my runs but be fine by the 2nd day in time for my next run. My knees no longer ache. So I sort of thought this type of knee pain was normal - i.e. my body adjusting to running, I'm obese so there is a lot of pressure on my knees, etc.

    A few weeks back I had 1 day that my knee was having some pain during running but I was able to finish through it. After finishing I immediately iced, elevated and rested for 2 days. I've been fine ever since.

    So I wonder, if some aches and pains can be your body adjusting to this form of exercise?

    I tried to do C25K two years ago, and I had to quit in week 3 because my knees hurt so badly I could barely walk.  

    This time around, I got fitted at a local running store for stability shoes because I over pronate when I run.  I will graduate from the program on Saturday and have had absolutely zero knee pain.  I love my new shoes.  I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something that I wasn't sure I was going to stick with, which is why I didn't buy good shoes back in 2010.  I am really glad I did now though.  

  • Thanks girls. Could be the shoes... I have new ones, but wasn't fit. I also have plantar fasciitis in my left foot- that knee is worse! Maybe I should try my orthotics again? If I can find them!! The pain is all day, achy, all around the kneecap, but worst on the bottom
