Where does non-GMO tofu come from?
Here's my random question of the day. I could spend more time googling this, but I'm sure one of you ladies knows the answer off the top of your head
Hasn't Monsanto monopolized the soybean market? I thought almost ever farmer out there is using seed that contains at least some of their genetically modified bean make-up?

Re: Where does non-GMO tofu come from?
Just noticed your post below with the PDF Lauren. All I had to do was scroll. Knew one of you would have info.
I've noticed so many bloggers explicitly statig "non-GMO tofu" in their recipes recently, that' what got me thinking.
This website may help: http://www.nongmoproject.org/
It's a non-profit that actually has it's own vetting system that companies can go through to get certified as non-GMO.
I've used it as a resource to find products that are non GMO, though I can't say I remember looking up Tofu specifically. Also a lot of websites have a FAQ that may answer your question - for example, I went to MorningStars website and found out that MorningStars veggie burgers have GMOs (which was a major bummer for me).
I wish there would be some regulations on the packaging though.

I do see non-gmo labeled tofu in the grovery store. My question is where are they getting the soybeans if almost all the supply is GMO?
Page SuperGreen on the Green Living board...she has a great, printable pocket guide for non-GMO brands that I know she's emailed to nesties in the past. I don't think I still have it in my email otherwise I'd just send it to you myself!
I don't know specifically for tofu but organic does not mean non GMO for all products.
Apparently my info might be a bit outdated (I was refering to a time when I worked for a soy milk company but it appears the rules have changed). A quick google search does imply however that to be labelled organic the food is not meant to have GMOs but there is no testing requirements to prove such. Would be interesting to see what the food legislation actually states.
