Hi all -
I haven't used my serger for sewing on knits at all - in fact I have stayed away from knits even on the normal machine because I am scared of them! However I decided to take the plunge and I am in the process of making this top.
I want to make it look really professional and I want to do it on the serger, and finish the bottom (she does a zig zag on the regular machine and eaves the hem unfinished) so I have some questions:
1) Is coverstitch what I want to use for the hem and tube part where the sash goes?
2) How do I deal with differential feed? The user manual for my machine is not super helpful - it basically shows you where the knob is and gives ...FWIW I have the Singer 14T967DC, but I don't think anyone here has that one. I am more looking for general guidelines.
3) Do I use ballpoint needles?
TIA!
Re: Serging knits for the first time (scared!)
I can't answer all your questions, but I do know that you need to change differential feed tension so that it doesn't stretch your fabric out as you go. I believe mine was at 0.7 when I did my knit skirt rather than the regular 2. I'd highly suggest taking a scrap of knit fabric and trying it out on there first before you start on your project.
As far as needles go I just used my regular needles and it wasn't a problem.
Don't know if your book is 217 pages but I found a manual for your machine online.
