Malaysia is under a tsunami warning

Thank goodness KL is a half hour inland or I'd be crapping myself right now.

Re: Malaysia is under a tsunami warning

  • Fingers crossed nothing comes from it...I think the authorities are uber cautious with warnings since the horrendous effects a number of years ago of no warning...

(Is KL half an hour walk or half an hour drive inland? ;-)   )

    Good! :-)

They are most likely very cautious but still.

    Phew!

And you said that the new king is being crowned today as well?  They are most likely being extra special cautious on a day like this...

Yeah, but I think that happened earlier today.  It's not a massive massive big deal since being king here isn't for life.  There are nine sultans who rotate being king.  The new king has been king before when he was a young man.

  • Just saw that the threat of tsunami has receded! That was a big earthquake though... 8.7...

    That must be a relief...

  • I just read that. They also issued a warning for any country with a coast along the Indian Ocean, including South Africa and Australia, so they seem to be being extremely cautious. But still, fingers crossed for you since you're much closer to where the earthquake happened.

    Did you feel it?

Oh! I never knew that! Certainly an interesting idea... is there a lineage for the sultans too? How are they "replaced" when one dies?

Definitely going in the "something new I learnt today" list!

The positions of sultan are hereditary. Theoretically, each state has one, but the old states that were territorially controlled by European powers for a long time (Penang and Melaka) as well as the two that used to be part of Brunei (Sabah and Sarawak) don't have sultans, so there are only nine. I have no idea what happens if the king does in office because I don't think it's ever happened. When a sultan dies he is replaced by his son or closestale relative. The sultanships(if that's what you'd call it?) are really old. Some of the sultans' families have held the seat for centuries. Interesting fact: part of the reason Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942 was because the Japanese were able to see all if the British troop positions from the tower of the palace of the Sultan of Johor just across the strait. The British couldn't demolish the tower because tey didn't want the Sultan of Johor pissed at them after the war was over.
