Resume help

I'm updating my resume and I have questions.

How far back in employment history should you typically go?

Do you only include past jobs that are relevant to the position that your applying for? Any and all jobs?

Would you include a "Degree in Progress" in your Education section?

Re: Resume help

  • I include anything relevant, regardless of how long ago it was.

And absolutely include ongoing education - list the school, degree.  Instead of listing a graduation date, list expected graduation date.

Yup, all of this... so long as you can get it to fit onto 1 page.

It's funny because I was working on my resume earlier as well... 'tis a day for job prospects!

  • I've seen quite a few places ask for all jobs within the last 10 years. While you definitely want to include any jobs relevant to what you're looking for now, I wouldn't not include other jobs you might have had in-between relevant ones, but I think it's okay to limit to within x amount of years (like, I don't include my job in high school and early college, but I do have all jobs since 2003 including Target where I worked for 8 months from when I got laid off by the photographer I was working for and until I got hired as a digital lab specialist at a local camera store). Hiring managers don't like seeing gaps in employment, and don't always give you the chance to explain why you have one. The old rule of sticking to a one page resume is pretty much gone, and many "experts" are now saying its okay to be long enough to include everything that's relevant.

I would definitely put the estimated graduation date for your education.

Also, I would join LinkedIn if you haven't already, and because of the field you're in, you might also want to look into an about.me page.

  • I read it re-zoom help 3 times. Embarrassed

I wouldn't put all work experience (like high school jobs), but I would put anything revelent. You can spin unimportant jobs, but I wouldn't include everything. I would definitley include ongoing education information with an expected graduation date.

  • What if I really only have one relevant job? Just list that one?

I haven't updated my resume since college when I got my current job. So I really only have the one relevant job, granted I've worked here for 6 years.

Did you have different positions within the same employer?  You could break that down and list the experiences with those

  • hmm... that's tougher.  In that case, I'd include any other long-term job you had. Show that your a loyal employee.

I started as an intern - but that was only for 4ish months before I got the FT gig

    Nooner - I had 2 other "long-term" jobs (3+ years) as a waitress & cashier. Should I include those?

I agree. You can make unimportant jobs seem more relevent. When were were writing my sister's, I know we wrote up some great something about the "marketing" she did at the orchard.

While the focus on someone who's worked with a single employer for over a decade, I think this link still has some good suggestions on how to write a resume with only single (relevant) job.

     http://www.pongoresume.com/blogPosts/139/how-to-build-a-resume-after-many-years-with-1-employer.cfm

Especially with separating different titles or departments you may have held/worked in during your time there, so you can show growth and also the different skill sets those positions might have necessitated.

This is also why I suggested the about.me page, since it will give you a chance to visually show off your design skills, to back up what you say in your resume and where you can link things like your LinkedIn page or online portfolio for your designs, websites, photography, etc.

  • I agree with everyone as well. If you only have had 1 relevent job, also list all others to show that you don't just bounch from one company to the next. I would also list any and all tasks/duties you had from the non-relevent ones that you can "talk up." My grandmother had a job of writing resumes for people and was able to make my high school gig of selling lingerie sound glamourous!

It definitely is the day for job prospects...I just applied for a new job as well !
