I know this has been asked before, but I can't find it

Yesterday I ate about 1200 calories, but I walked for 45 minutes and then went to an hour long zumba class, so burned roughly 600. I was completely satisfied though, and ate every 3-4 hours. Is this really problematic, only netting 600 calories? Everything I ate was high quality food, so I got plenty of nutrients (tracking on My Fitness Pal).

Today on the other hand, I'm starving even though I've eaten breakfast and a snack and haven't even worked out yet. Could this be 'leftover' from technically not eating enough yesterday? Sorry if that's a dumb question. TIA.

  • Yes, it is a problem.  And the fact that you're starving today probably relates.

One day of eating too low won't kill you, but if you do the 1200 calorie thing for more than a few days, it will stall your metabolism and hinder weight loss in the long term.  Since you still have a decent amount of weight to lose, you need to make sure you're eating enough.

Normally I aim for 1400, but it just so happened that my dinner of tilapia, brown rice, and broccoli was extremely low. I'm really not trying to starve myself, but I really was satisfied. I'm trying that whole 'listen to your body' thing, and I just wasn't hungry.

Sounds good to me. So far, I've already had a cup of whole grain cheerios with skim milk, an apple, a kashi bar, and an oz. of almonds. I'm STILL hungry waiting for lunch to get here. Geez.

Eat more protein! You'll feel more full and satisfied.

That was the point of the almonds. I think they're finally setting in, because I'm not as hungry now. : )  First time of the whole grain cheerios and I forgot to check the protein content. I was going to add some turkey bacon, but ran out of time. I'll know for next time!

  • look at your averages.  One day isn't going to kill you, but if you average that low over a period of time, it's probably not helping you out.  If you use the mobile MFP app, look at the weekly graphs they get you.

I eat under my allotted calories every day because I know I'm going to go over on the weekends, but looked at from a week to week point of view instead of day to day, my weekly calories are always spot on.

That's really okay? I would figure it would be the equivelant of "catching up" on sleep, which they say is never a good idea. I definitely go over on the weekends too, though.

You need more protein. In the grand scheme of things, almonds do not possess enough protein to keep you satisfied.

Yes, that's really okay because it's not like your body says "hey, it's midnight, let me reset my internal calorie counter!"  Think of it this way, if you overate by 3500 calories on a weekly basis, you'd gain a pound a week, just like if you under eat by 3500 calories a week, you're going to lose a pound.

I think it's really, really important and often overlooked to get a weekly and monthly view of your weight and eating habits, in addition to the daily information.  I track my weight by weekly averages even instead of just weighing in on one certain day.  It helps keeps the highs and the lows in perspective.

I definitely agree with this. Your body doesn't know it's a new day, so I just try to be consistent over longer periods of time. If I get caught up in the day-to-day numbers I go crazy! I try to eat when my body says I'm hungry. If that means I'm "not eating enough" that day, I'm usually hungry enough later to make up for it.

  • Thanks ladies! I'll definitely add more protein and keep an eye on the weekly view.

That seems REALLY high carb and low protein for that amount of calories.

An ounce of almonds is only 6 grams of protein.  3 egg whites is 45 calories and 10 grams of protein.
I used to eat shredded wheat for B and my dietician suggested lowering my carbs and upping my protein.  I can have 3 egg whites, 1 slice sprouted grain bread, 2 slices of ham and a slice of cheese for 195 calories with 23g of protein.  The cheerios and milk alone is more cals and less filling than that.  Add in a cup of coffee and a serving of fruit and you've got a very well balanced and filling meal

Yeah, carbs are kinda my downfall. I'm not a big egg fan, so I've been struggling with breakfast. Never heard of sprouted grain bread, but I'm pretty sure my small town grocery store won't have it. I'll look for it next time I head over to the big city next door that has a Fresh Market. : )
