This Saturday I will graduate from Couch to 5K. I actually ran three miles last Saturday, but my race is this week. I have loved it and am going to keep running and pushing myself.
When I started C25K, I also started doing 30 Day Shred two days a week, but I hate hate hate it, and have only been doing it about once/week the last 3 weeks or so. I do want to do some sort of cross-training/strength training along with running.
I found Hal Higdon's 10K training plan and I think I am going to do that next.
I am thinking of joining the gym at work. I am very limited in the times I can work out, as I have two small children and a H who works all the time. I think I can do strength training during my lunch hour (hoping I won't get as sweaty as I do during my runs) 2x per week. I can work with a trainer for free through the gym to set me up with a good plan. I talked to H and he said that he could pick up the kids one day per week after work, so I can stay at the gym and cross train (hopefully swim). In addition to this and my three runs/week, I would try to work in another cross training day (either walking or doing the elliptical at home).
How does this sound? Am I going to get sweaty strength training? I am trying to clearly articulate my next goal besides "run a 10K", but I'm having trouble with it. I want to focus on overall fitness in addition to running.
The only 10K race that I can find nearby is July 14. Should I start the Higdon plan (which is 8 weeks long) next week or wait until I am 8 weeks out from the race? If the latter, what do I do in the few weeks between now and then?
Thanks! This board is awesome and so many of you have been very helpful to me over the past few weeks!
Re: Life after C25K
First off, congrats on finishing C25K, it's an awesome program!
Second, how much you'll sweat during strength training is entirely individual. I sweat like a hog while running, but not too much during strength training, so if you're like me, you should be fine. I pack some baby wipes for when I workout at lunch, that way if you do get a little sweaty you can just wipe off.
After I finished C25K, I just kept running 3-4 days a week, slowly building up to 5 miles, etc. You could either do this, or if you want to start the 10k plan right away, I think that's probably fine too
Actually, having extra time built into your training plan is a good thing, especially if you get sick and miss a couple of runs, or go on vacation, etc. Or if you're struggling certain weeks then you can repeat a week if you want to. Being able to run a 10k several weeks before your actual race is a good thing IMO. Once you finish the plan, just keep your mileage up until the actual race. If you're already used to doing the mileage, that will make the race that much easier.
Thanks for the advice! We are taking a couple trips between now and July 14, so you make a good point about building time into training.
after i finished c25k, the timing was just right for me to start hal higdon's half marathon (novice) training program. it worked out perfectly for me as i was training for the tinkerbell half. a friend of mine went right into the bridge to 10K and is really happy with her progress.
i would probably go ahead and start the higdon program now so you can keep up your momentum. can't hurt to just keep on going, you know? i know for me, if i were to stop, i'd have trouble starting back up again.
good luck!
Totally true. I've been transitioning from plan to plan since last August.
I started with C25K, then went to the HH 10K program, then the HH Novice 2 Half Marathon program, now I'm working on the HH Intermediate Spring Training, next up is the HH Novice 2 Marathon plan!
I need a plan to keep me motivated. I took a little break after the HM and while it was necessary, I lost some of my mojo. I'm just the kind of person who needs a set schedule. It's like my little paper personal trainer...

i think it sounds like a good plan. i have been training for my first 5 k also, which is this weekend and after that i am doing a 5 miler then a 10 miler. i have been using hh program as well. i might train for a half marathon after the 10 k or a sprint tri, not sure yet.
